Yeah, he's had injuries, but it's a calculated gamble as he'd be a superb fit if we keep him in shape.

i think he was out of favour im sure he was fit for atleast 60% of the season? probs more but i could be wrong

Sky Sports understands Sunderland are closing in on the signing of Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell.

Talks between both clubs are thought to be at an advanced stage and Sunderland are hoping to tie up a deal for Rodwell in the next 24 hours.

Should Sunderland land the 23-year-old, the signing would be something of a coup for Gus Poyet's side with a host of clubs chasing the player's signature.

Half of the Premier League are believed to have been keeping tabs on Rodwell's situation, but Sunderland have emerged as favourites to land the England international.

City are willing to let Rodwell move on as he has struggled to establish himself at the Etihad Stadium due to a series of injuries since his arrival from Everton in the summer of 2012.

Rodwell made just 10 appearances for City last season and the arrival of Fernando from Porto this summer has increased the competition for places in City's star-studded line-up.

The Southport-born star is ready to move on in search of regular first-team football as he looks to kick-start his career and boost his chances of breaking back into the England set-up, with his last of three caps to date coming against Brazil in a friendly at the Maracana in June 2013.

please no one tell him that playing for sunderland automatically rules you out of the england side :emoticon-0184-tmi:

Bit of an ask to displace Yaya Toure or Fernandinho for any player to be fair, add a few more to that as well and with Lampard coming in as well.

Can't think why there's not more in for him to be honest, no disrespect, maybe they were all thinking (like me) that he's been injured for the last 2-3 years!
 
Just realised, Southampton haven't been linked here, Rodwell would be perfect for Koeman's side, they've money to burn. Not even linked with this transfer... there's something going on down there, I'd be worried. Quality like Rodwell could excel at Southampton and he could be recycled and churn out another £30m in a couple of seasons... something doesn't add up to me.

Not to say Rodwell still wouldn't have chosen you lot mind, just seems odd Southampton are overlooking players like these when their squad has been depleted.
