Just seems ironic that we are now pinning our hopes on a German firm to start the regeneration of Hull, well that's the theory. For the record I have been to Germany on a few occasions and have been welcomed despite my English nationality.

Think the Russians are regarded more negatively in Germany for WW2 for the savage revenge meted out in Berlin and the East.

I visited Beethoven's house in Bonn a few years ago and the guide started to criticise the RAFs blanket bombing policy which destroyed much of the surrounding area. I did a Basil Fawlty 'you started it' speech by describing what my hometown looked like as I was growing up. She didn't really appreciate it and held a grudge against me for the rest of the tour. Eventually telling me off for touching one of Ludwig Van's ear trumpets!

In terms of rebuilding Germany, the Museum of Modern German History in Bonn is brilliant. When you look at that country in 1946 and how it was rebuilt over the next 30 years it really is awe inspiring.

Germany was rebuilt initially with a lot of help and money from the West and you should remind Frau tour guide that it was mainly the RAF who kept West Berlin free in 1948 with the Berlin airlift.

Possibly seeing as they signed a non aggression pact at the start of WW2 then Hitler upset them somewhat when he invaded Russia.

The Luftwaffe weren't seen off by Hull. They bombed it, though not as heavily as their cities were bombed or cities in other European countries. All of who managed to rebuild before Hull did.

Liverpool actually 'surrendered' in WW2 after being bombed. A little known fact. Hull never surrendered to anyone.

Re the re-building of Hull after ww2, it didn't happen as quickly as other cities in fact until St Stephens was built we still had bombed ruins from ww1. Blame the people of Hull for voting the wrong people into our council offices. Unfortunately I could be blamed until I became more aware of the political scene.

It couldn't surrender to anyone. However it was reported that officials were worried about morale in Hull not due to heavy raids but the regular unloading of bombs by planes which had not reached their target elsewhere but had a rough idea where Hull due to the estuary resulting in a loss of sleep over long periods.
The war has been used as an excuse for things in Hull far too much.

This country received more Marshall Aid than either France or Germany. However, it didn't use it as wisely.
Think you will find the Yankee air force played quite a part in the Berlin airlift as well.

I'm not suggesting there was a Hull Air Force whose firepower and skill defeated the krauts.

I'm advancing the notion that they dropped their **** on us and buckle we did not.

Lots of places all over Europe were a lot more heavily bombed than Hull and had thouands more casualties. They don't use it as an excuse for ever failure in the city 70 years on.
The most bombed area in the war was Malta. The most heavily damaged was Warsaw. Without googling
I doubt many could name the second most damaged city.

I agree, proud of our blitz stoicism but its time to move on, isn't that what winning City of Culture is about, a bright new future?

There are still bomb sites in Berlin btw.

Probably because the commies didn't develop those parts. Went to Hamburg in the early 1960's. 45,000 killed there in one raid, 750,000 made homeless. Not a sign of any damage whereas Hull had signs of it all over and for a long time after. Hull was closed by 11pm in those days whilst was a bright, buzzing place with bars open all night.
The same could be said of many other places. On D-day over 40,000 French were killed by our bombs in 2 days, compared to 60,000 in this country in 6 years. Caen was nearly obliterated but rebuilt by the 1960s. The way
Hull didn't get things done was a disgrace. Labour MPs in Hull and a Labour Government after the war greatly let down the city.

You're a smallish club from a 'boring' town. It's your third PL season.

But you're going in the right direction to forge a legacy for the people of Hull to cherish. Give it a few years and you'll be known as a Premier League club through and through but right now you can't argue that you're the small fish (as if there is anything wrong with that).

I'm assuming that most of these fans are either plastic armchair lovers or fans of lower league clubs who are jealous of your success.

Good thread this. Do you put all of it down to the politicians Castro. I used to hear a lot of the old blokes i used to work with years ago blame it on a cabal of rich men in Hull who didnt want new investement coming in as they would have to pay workers more. No idea if theres anything in that. Can you shed any light?

too easy

Jerry shouldn't've started it.

Reap what you sow.

Quite agree. Bomber Harris said that the Germans started the war with the notion they would go around bombing everyone but no one would bomb them. Well, they have sown the wind and now they will reap the whirlwind..

Of course Harris is a bete noire of the lefties but the Germans would have done far worse if they had had the means.

Can't see it myself. Labour was in charge of the council and would have had the final say.

Have heard a similar story about Brid. Ford wanted to open a factory there after the war where that industrial estate is now next to the railway but businessmen didn't want them as it would have affected them employing people cheaply during the summer. Seeing as many of those businessmen were on the council maybe that one did have some truth in it.

I've heard exactly the same story, many times, but relating to Hull.

That's the quote I was thinking of.

What was it Goering said "if a bomb drops on Berlin, you can call me Meyer".
