The thread was about the football club but quickly the reason for us being seen in a negative light was brought around to the city of Hull being bombed in second world war.

Coventry was also bombed heavily but it didn't stop them from being a top flight club for most of the post war era bar the last 10 years.

The reference to bombings was a reason given for Hull being perceived as a bit ****, not for the football club performing badly, just as Coventry is also seen as being a bit ****.

Alright then I'll leave it to you to prove me wrong........
Starting with the mighty Featherstone Rovers.....
Widnes......
Or what about the town of St Helens ?
The mining hamlet of Castleford......?
Not forgetting that we are constantly reminded that Hull is the capital of rugby league, the only true city derby, yawn, and so on.
Come on prove me wrong, And I know plenty about the subject.

Just joined this forum - 1st post :) Interesting views on this subject.

I quite like it when pundits dismiss Hull and then it is backed up by beating the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and then more recently Liverpool and Newcastle. I think it is better to be out of the limelight and just let the manager get on with the job of keeping us up.

Re WW2 etc., my personal view is that following the defeat of Germany in WW1, the reparations the Allies wanted form Germany were so crippling to the country that when some bloke stands up and gives the German people a reason for losing the war (namely Jews, Communists and anyone else that he didn’t like) and they are so brain washed that they buy into it or are forced at gunpoint to go along with it, that there was no escaping WW2. I know it is a bit farfetched, but I blame the Nazis for the war, not necessarily Germans, but I can understand why they would want to lash out at a Europe that humiliated them so badly in 1919. So in an indirect way, the end of WW1 caused WW2.

As one poster rightly said the RAF looked after Germany through the airlift, so I believe that Allies had learned what to do with a defeated country, although I suspect that Communist Russia taking half of Germany and the capital was more likely the reason.

Re bombing of Hull, it is a fact that German bombers unloaded on Hull as they knew where it was on their way home, but did anyone know that the opposite side of the Humber, South Ferriby, Barton etc. had lights erected to look exactly like the Hull docks from the air so that the Germans would bomb there rather than Hull docks. That is a fact, although I am not sure how much it helped as Hull was very heavily bombed.

Another factor in Hull's lack of regeneration or indeed its late regeneration is the docks in the 70s when the authorities wanted Hull to be a container port and the docker unions rejected the idea, meaning that they went over to N Lincs essentially ruining the docking industry in Hull as the fishing dried up.

I am boring the pants off myself now <yawn>

UTT and let’s take 12 points plus a Wembley trip of the Mackems and Geordies over the next 2 weeks!!!! :)

Dresden was bombed at the request of the Soviets to support their advance as they thought it an important transport centre.

And of course Sheffield Eagles did after 5 years what FC have never managed, win at Wembley. And in doing so had won the Cup in 5 years as many times Rovers had in over 100 years.

How the **** would Gerry know if Liverpool approved of the bombings or not?

Did they paint 'scousers say no' on the side of the bombs?

What could they be omitted from, a list of towns who don't approve of bombings?

Point me to a history book, as it makes **** all sense to me.

Let's forget the league titles shall we.

My point wasn't proving the Hull and Rovers have a **** hot history, because they ain't and I don't care that much.

I'm just challenging bullshit.

Only in the minds of their own deluded supporters are these two big hitters.

Saints, Wigan Leeds etc all on a another level.

Im being so bold as to suggest a mid ground between the big hitters and small fish.

I'm plaicing them in medium sized fish ground.
