Humber Bridge now on line payment only. So a question to those in the know... Clandestine price increase to £2... for those who are new to all this and forget to pay, there will be fines obviously, (extra revenue) they have just laid off how many staff on £xxxxx and the road surface resembles most ERYCC roads... is this a profit making business..?

EDIT: JUST WENT ON LINE TO PAY BOTH WAYS TOIDAY 'WHILE I REMEMBERED'..AND ITS SAYS 'NO DEBT FOUND'

Runcorn Bridge is the same - absolute con - it relies on people forgetting to pay within 24 hours because you cant pay at the time when you're driving - always best to pay in advance if you can

Think I read that your toll wouldn't be uploaded until monday or Tuesday.
Have a read on their website as they will be hoping everyone that uses it over the weekend will forget and then get hit with a £25 fine

This
You need to keep checking during the week @TIGERSCAVE
It is still £1.50 if you register and pre buy credit (or something similar) and I think they just take it then so less likely to miss a payment

I don't really use the bridge, but the last time I saw it in the news they were discussing scrapping the fees altogether. Madness that it's now paid for itself twice over and still milking hard-working drivers of their cash

So if you call the telephone number can you pre-pay for an intended crossing? Thereby avoiding the .50p increase. Or do you need to open an account. I only go across once every say three months to see friends in Scunny. Opening an account will be a utter waste of time.

Just try remembering to pay all the bloody fees in Central London within 24 hours. ****ing little short-arsed midget Khant.
Glasgow City Council have more than 600 vehicles(out of a fleet of over 1600) that are non compliant in it's own LEZ!!!

That includes all its uplift trucks used for parking enforcement....:emoticon-0102-bigsm

I loved the ferry, my mother took me on it when I was about nine years old, I honestly thought we were going to the Netherlands.
I heard the sorry about the bloke heading for the Hull to Rotterdam ferry who rocked up at the Pier Head and got on the paddle steamer going across the Humber....Not sure if this was an urban myth.....A bit like Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys is a qualified Rugby League referee. Or that David Bowie and Iggy Pop were keen birdwatchers.

I think the account seemed fairly easy and probably suitable for a few uses a year but you’ve piqued my interest now so I’ll have to go and bloody check!

Standby

The initial £150m loan used to build the bridge is currently a debt of £330m.

Not only is it not profitable it's unlikely they'll never clear the debt.

Over 80% of revenues go to interest payments the rest goes on maintenance.
The UK must be one of the worst countries in Western Europe for infrastructure and maintenance. Everything just seems to take longer than anticipated, loads of red tape and inefficiency and it costs loads. Doesn’t matter if it’s a bridge, a road, a power plant or a series of public gardens named after a monarch.

Weirdly their website says that the new system will kick in on 2nd, but they launch the new website and app at the same time so God knows how that works for people who are travelling first thing?

Why not do that beforehand so you can pre buy credit and get sorted before it goes live?

And the OP said it was online only today? And he was right

I regularly use the bridge and on average it take at least a couple of days to register on their site. Just keeping popping your details in, and they'll appear dont worry.

I thought they'd wiped the debt a few years ago ago after many years of payment, after it was decided the debt would never be paid off, this lead to an actual decrease in the crossing fees at the time. The revenue from what I understand is now used for the upkeep of the bridge and staff payments ( no doubt they'll cream some off as well )

Edit - just found this online were the local government agreed to take on the liability of the bridge;
The UK government wrote off £150 million of the Humber Bridge's debt in 2012. This action followed a 2011 announcement to tackle the £332 million debt, which allowed tolls to be halved to £1.50 on April 1, 2012. While a significant portion was removed, the debt was restructured rather than fully eliminated at that time.

I thought that was the case BB... but now there are how many fewer staff with the closing of the booths??.. and as for the upkeep of the bridge, the road surface is a disgrace... it will be interesting to watch the pandemonium it causes at rush hour morning and evening at the roundabout. The toll booths actually staggered the flow/approach of cars to the roundabout now there will be a constant stream and cars backed up on the roundabout approach.
