Have you heard of Chick Lit or Chick flicks?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Chicks as an expression of women, anymore than calling a bloke a guy.

Is it so difficult for you to say female or woman? Both terms are a damn site more respectful than 'chick'.

There used to be a female ref in Aberdeen called Morag Pirie, who used to officiate at some of my son`s boys club games. Not only was she a very good ref, but there was less swearing, arguing and generally better behaviour and discipline (from players, coaches and spectators) when she reffed.

And the consistent referencing of a woman's looks as some kind of device with which to judge? (I refer you to "ten pinters" etc)?

I have, they are slang terms!

No, maybe when at the pub with your mates I guess! But in the company of other women?

Theres a time and a place and all that.

Anyhow, its more your incredibly rude/hostile/ignorant behaviour/language/attitude towards women that is most alarming.

It's merely about treating other human beings with equitable respect, regardless of gender, colour, belief etc. They're all human beings. Not greater or lesser. That seems to be the position poor Ducky is troubled by.

Not to mention he claims a woman's physical appearance should be the main factor in determining whether they should be a linesman or not:

It's not important that they're capable of making accurate calls (which Sian Massey has shown she is able to do) but whether they have a good body <doh>

God, you lot must be a barrel of laughs with the lads down the alehouse. How do you think women judge men, by their intellect? Bloody hell you should hear my Mrs and her cronies when they get the coven together. Lighten up, some of you are way too uptight. As for judging women by their appearance, I bet there's not one normal bloke who watched the Olympics who didn't think Jessica Ennis had a nice arse. Talented and fit, what's wrong with celebrating that?

FYI, I have no problem with women and have been married to the lovely Mrs Duck for many years. Mind you as I was her boss and used my position to get in with her, you lot probably wouldn't approve.

Can't afford the pub to be honest with you, only really been properly two or three times in just under two years! I know all of this, I guess we're given the 'Respect your elders' 'Only in the right company boys'. So naturally that has affected the way i speak when around people who are not my nearest and dearest. However, you gotta concede you are slightly over the top with it all! And yes, I can definately appreciate a nice arse, though I'm not Ennis' biggest fan personally!

Women do admire handsome men with good bodies...all part of nature ensuring the continuation of the species. I have to say that I suspect we are more saucy than crude. I have always wanted intellect as well....therein lies my misfortune<whistle>

Oh my god, this thread has gone beyond ridiculous now. Are people really getting upset about the use of the slang term 'chick'? Are people really that precious and anally retentive?

So we cant use any form of slang that differentiates male and female- even if it is non-offensive? (Oh pardon me.... I forget its up to the offendee to decide if its offensive. I know lets not differentiate between men and women in discussion- lets refer to them as a person.... or human being. Lets avoid any discussion where somebody might think it relevant to mention what kind of genitalia somebody has.

For goodness sake, engage brain for a millisecond will you. It's about context. Just as it's fine to have "laddish" conversations (usually somewhat tongue-in-cheek) when there's a group of you in the pub (by the way, yes, I'm a lot of fun at the pub), and it's fine for a group of women to discuss the aesthetics of some men, it's inappropriate in the workplace to pinch arses, call women chicks and judge upon looks. It's also inappropriate to do so in the context of an online forum where a discussion has been raised as to the various merits of a woman managing a football team. Please tell me that this isn't *that* hard to understand? And it's nothing to do with thought police, lefty politics. It's everything to do with respect.

From the misogynistic attitude you've displayed in this thread (and any other thread that's vaguely to do with women's football), that doesn't surprise me somehow.

But yeah, as LTL says it's all about context.

What I find hard to understand is someone who indulges in "laddish" conversations down the pub, but tries to shut down free speech on a forum. What you have done is classic thought police tactics. You have causally lumped calling girls chicks, judging them by their looks in with sexual assault. I have never said it is ok to assault anyone at work so stop trying to tar me with that particular brush.

It is not for you to decide what is and isn't acceptable, anymore than it is for me to. We have had a member of the female sex on here with no problem being called a chick, yet you are getting your knickers in a twist over it. Despite the fact that you indulge in these "laddish" conversations in the pub, you try and claim the moral ground on here.

    You sir, are a hypocrite.
