Agree with that I wouldn't stay a Venice beach either but Marina del Rey is a decent shout and I stayed there for a couple of nights on my last visit.

I've been to LA around a dozen times I'd guess and I'd never even think of not having a hire car.

I almost moved there in 2006/7 and had my H1B visa in my passport , a job, and was looking at rental properties around Hermosa Beach. Then I met my other half and ended up in Sweden.

LA has something for everyone, which makes it difficult to make recommendations. Let me throw one out there that isn't in the common tour book "must see" section like Disneyland, Hollywood, Universal Studios, etc. Griffith Park is an old observatory perched high on a hill (where else would an observatory be?) east of the metro area. The old observatory itself is interesting and the views magnificent, but the surrounding area is a nature preserve with hiking, petting zoos, etc. It's a great place to spend a day, especially if you have kids.

This one may be a stretch for foreign citizens, but the Reagan Ranch and Presidential library in Simi Valley is magnificent. The grounds are beautiful and the library/museum is like a walk through the history of the 80s. If you are a fan of Margaret Thatcher you'd enjoy the visit. If not, I don't recommend it.

Griffith Park is also famously the location for the filming of Rebel Without A Cause.

Was in LA a few years ago. Asked a local the best way to walk to Griffith Park (it was only 4-5 miles or so). He looked at me as if I'd just landed from outer space. People don't walk in LA.
It's worth going though, in a car...
Also went to Laurel Canyon, place was full of cars and roadworks. The grocery store at the bottom was still reminiscent of the 60/70's though.

In Florida just now. Place I'm staying the owner has this in his backyard!

It's a 1976 ElectraGlide, still in it's original shipping crate, totally unused. Fella's put a plate glass top on the crate and uses it as a bar.
Crazy Americans!

Have to say, it's the best thing I've seen in FL so far...

The last time I was in Florida on holiday, we went to Daytona and it was a biker fest weekend, there were bikes parked down a road as far as the eye could see, I've never seen so many in one place.

Went there about 20 years ago, lots of driving. Roads were crap but not too busy outside of Havana. Lots of unroadworthy vehicles around, ie **** brakes and suspension. Might be better now but I wouldn't bank on it! Go, do it, but be careful!
