We can't decide where to go or what type of holiday we want this year. The kids have enjoyed the city breaks we've done so we should probably do another one of them but we're bored of the sitting by the hotel pool holidays. Maybe we could sit by a pool in a villa. I wouldn't want to do anything more strenuous than that.

My missus did talk about doing some kind of inter railing thing during the Easter hols but that was a terrible idea that got shot down very quickly. I suspect we'll end up doing it.

Disneyworld? your kids are still fairly young?

Skiing trip? Something different for them...

Could make them walk miles in yosemite too. I saw some kid there and he seemed to enjoy it with his dad

We've never been skiing, we may well do that next year. My brother recently married into a chalet owning family which is helpful.

Who knows maybe you will find attraction in it. More likely not though. And it's expensive!.

We did Eurodisney when he was 3 and she was 4 months so as far as I'm concerned they've been and they don't need to go again. Actually, neither are that fussed.

Fair dos. Was thinking disneyworld in Florida. Heard it's next level but never been myself and you need a week to do it all. Then there's also a universal studio i believe and a SeaWorld.

I did all that on the West coast a couple of weeks after 9/11. There were no queues anywhere as hardly anyone was travelling to the US and the yanks were all in their nuclear fallout shelters. Rather than reliving it and standing in ludicrously long queues it's better all round if I just show the kids the pictures from back then.

I ****ing love camping. I’ve slept out in some amazing places, in a tree house in Venezuela with tarantulas up in the branches. In the back country in the Sierra Nevada under a Milky Way that was as bright as the moon, with Coyotes calling to each other. And in the desert in Mauritania with the sound of the Atlantic Ocean crashing in the distance.

Just got back from ours and yes, it is expensive.

Worth it though, every penny.

Utterly stunned to see my 9 & 7 year olds fearlessly bombing down the slopes and when they are doing that, you know they aren't asking for an iPod or your phone!

Both are now way better than me. My eldest gets back from his school ski trip later today and hopefully he's kicked on too.

It's a great trip, you're all doing stuff together and it's a great crack if you go with friends. The meals and drinks are part of it.
Although not too many (friends), the 'admin' while you're out there can be a pain in the arse and you just need to focus on yourselves and your own kids without being too bothered by what others are up to.

Would recommend it to anyone.

Again, depends where you go. I get the impression that people just think about camping as being like Carry on Camping, in some field with dozens of other people, when you could be in a nice hotel. Some of the places I've been camping have been right out in the wilderness in the US, Venezuela and Mauritania. There aren't any hotels out there and there aren't really any other people, just the scenery, the stars, the wildlife and a massive sense of being part of it all. And having to rely on your own resources, skills and wit. It's character building.

I'm gonna go full tilt Bear Grylls in a bit so I'll stop now.

We have another contender. Getting lost in the desert and putting a mat down and sleeping on it isn't some massive achievement

Did a weekend in Luxembourg a couple of weeks back

Got a week off before I start a new job at the end of this month so thinking a few days in Rome then down to Sorrento for a few more, with a day in Naples

Was going to do New Orleans that week but timing is a bit tight so didn't think we'd do it justice so that will have to wait until later this year

Will probably do one more after those - thinking either Banff, Vancouver or Japan plus bound to be the odd weekend away in Europe

Also going to be a weekend camping and a festival in there somewhere

Spent a month on Vancouver Island last year. Vancouver is a beautiful city, plus you've got Whistler an hour drive north. Vancouver Island is jaw dropping (if you like nature) and Banff is supposed to be stunning too. The Canadians are a good bunch too

I'd rather nail my bollocks to a plank then go to Dubai, if I never go it'll be too soon.

Would love to go to Morocco, a country I've never been to and should have (amongst loads of others of course).

Can't see it happen for a while with three young kids, will have to wait unfortunately.

Morocco is brilliant mate and don't let travelling with Kids put you off. The Moroccans are really family orientated so you won't have any grief travelling with kids. It's cheap as chips there too (as long as you don't go for 5* Hotels in Marrakech)

It's a real feast for the senses there, a complete culture change from Europe / US

It's more than that though mate. When you're 4 days from Civilisation, you have to think and plan about how you're going to eat, drink, wash and get your basic needs met. I've always found that to be a good challenge and the rewards for getting out of the beaten track are great.

Sounds like you should take a quick trip to Costco pre getting lost in the middle of nowhere and load up the van. If I was 4 days from civilisation I wouldn't be bothering with washing either, go full Castaway

I'm really keen on a trip to Japan Where are you heading mate ? I'm not so bothered about the cities, although I'd like to see Tokyo. But I'd love to get out into the sticks and see some temples, meet some old school Japanese people etc.

Kyoto is a city but steeped in japanese history and old japanese architecture

If you cant be arsed to go far stay in some ryokens in the mountains in hakone which inciude some shady hot springs. Heard theres some proper old skool temple near nara which you can stay in. Not sure this stuff is outdoorsy enough for you though

@PISKIE not sure yet mate, but will take @BobbyD ideas on board when planning the trip later this year, and like yerself, I'm a bit of an off the beaten tracker myself. I hate these tour groups/package holidays that shunt you from one place to the next on their timetable. I prefer to hire a car and go visit the 'natives'.

I did a 4 day hike in the back country in the Sierra Nevada Yosemite, and there aren't any roads. So you have to carry everything you're going to need, food, water etc. If you don't wash then you end up stinking and attract mosquitos and black fly who will eat you for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

But I am not really what you would call the "outdoorsy" type. I have been camping twice I think in my youth and it was **** both times. "Cooking" food over a fire where everything gets burnt to **** and all your clothes stink of smoke from the ****y fire to then lie down on the ground to sleep is not my idea of fun. I also am such a city boy I can't sleep without constant noise, none of this owls hooting bollocks I need sirens, pissed up people screaming outside, cars, police helicopters and general noise to sleep. Went to cornwall once and didn't sleep for 4 days, the sea was so loud I couldn't sleep, was very weird.

Dunno, in the mountains somewhere snowy. Think it could be France/Switzerland border. I'll ask him.

Glad to hear it mate. Most of the people on here appear to think a trip to the all inclusive bar is an adventure.
