How is he being pedantic? You incorrectly added a caveat about control which doesn't exist. As the rule is any touch from a defender on a cross negates offside as its a deliberate attempt to play the ball surely?
To deliberately play the ball (which is what the rules says) you have to have some form of control of the ball, otherwise it’s merely a deflection. That’s why it was pedantic, happy to help.

Just as a side issue, I read this when looking up Rule 11:

  • "a player in an offisde position is moving towards the ball with the intention of playing the ball and is fouled before playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the foul is penalised as it has occurred before the offside offence"
Really? That's what it says. Hmm, Prickford......

No, I wasn't and I'm not being pedantic.
You're claiming it wouldn't include touches on crosses, as you're not in control of it, but that's not in the rule.
It wouldn’t include deflections off crosses, as that’s not a deliberate playing of the ball by an opponent. It was offside, get over it.

That's not remotely true, though. You've just completely made it up.
You can play the ball when another player has control of it, nevermind not having control yourself.

No you've just made bit up about being in control. That's your interpretation rather than fact.

If you slide to block a cross then you've evidently made a deliberate attempt to play the ball.

Powerspurs was pointing this out the other day in the Leicester v Southampton game, I think it was.
Long was way offside from the ball striking the bar and was fouled before it came back to him.
Reading that, it should be a penalty. It isn't reffed like that, though.

A deliberate playing of the ball, explain how that wasn’t a deliberate playing of the ball? It was offside, the end.

C'mon now - at what stage did Lovren have that ball under control? Quite literally, if a defender stretches towards a cross and merely deflects it towards an opponent 5 yards in an offside position, who then scores, it's a goal because the defender deliberately attempted to play the ball . Absolutely diddly about control in the rules. Shall I post them, or just the link?

Ok mate you win I made the bit up about control and you made the bit up about that being offside tonight.

What the **** has a Zenit player have to do with that goal tonight like? <laugh>

Posters wrongly arguing it was offside somehow strengthening their argument by me mentioning the word control as opposed to merely deliberate.

Go figure.
