The Kane pen, I’m just going by the law as I understand it. The amendment to the law says that the player has to make an attempt to challenge for the ball. If he is fouled before any challenge the foul is given. That’s as I understand it anyway.

Tbf most pens are questionable now purely based on how players exaggerate and make the most of challenges so even blatant pens don’t look as much so due to this. I don’t think either were really pens but was just playing devils advocate with going by the letter of the law with Arsenal’s and the encroachment

The kick should have been retaken. Bot sides encroached but that has the same outcome. Giving the penalty on Kane was about the only thing the ref got right yesterday.

Agreed. We need better referees who actually enforce the Laws.

The Arsenal player who crossed the ball that Vertonghen cleared had also encroached. But that doesn't alter the fact that the kick should have been retaken.

I think you can make a case both ways. On balance I think the current wording is right. You shouldn't have the right to foul someone without penalty just because he is offside. But if you foul him in a challenge then the offside comes first.

I think the right approach would be: If the defending side encroaches, a goal should be awarded whatever happens to the kick; if the attacking side encroaches then it's a goal kick whatever happens to the kick. If both sides encroach then whatever happens stands. That should effectively prevent encroachment.
