Who would you have as our next Manager

Genuinely think if he hadn't taken the Celtic job, Rodgers would be a leading candidate to take over. Not that I like him particularly, but fits the profile (Head coach mould, comfortable with transfer committee set up, PL experience, decent with young players).

But a total dick.

Not a chance. Rodgers will be lucky not to mess up in Scotland. He is the biggest fan of Brendan Rodgers and how he ever got the Liverpool job from getting Swansea to play pretty football with barely any goals is beyond me other than the usual media fawning over anything Swansea (Martinez included.)

At least this thread will be put to bed soon, and then we can start dreaming of our next great manager??

We don't need to worry. Les told Gary Neville we didn't need to worry 17 months ago:

The January transfer window is upon us and there cannot be many clubs better equipped to make good decisions. In the longer term, if Koeman were to leave – for Barcelona, say – then Southampton would already know which coaches would fit their profile. Future proofing and being prepared for all eventualities seems simple but so many clubs fail to get it right.

Reed tells me: “We have a whole department for the recruitment of players, but it struck me some years ago that when a manager leaves, that’s when the club reacts and starts looking for a new one. I think we should be as diligent with that, because of the turnover of managers these days.

“Whether they are fired or attracted to another club, as with Mauricio [Pochettino], you have to be as far ahead with potential coaches as potential players. So I’m always tracking managers and coaches. What’s their style of play, how successful are they, what’s their personality like – so you can be ahead of the game. So I’m always looking at five or six potential managers who have already impressed me. It’s made it quicker. We’re not having off the wall discussions

The one thing that hasn't been mentioned properly this week has been this fact. Les has a list of names in his book for every eventuality. I am pretty sure that list gets updates and changed as managers move around.

Trust in Les

We all know the answer to that bit - mercenary.

The list we'll have will probably be full of young managers who play a certain way and get results with young squads. De Boer, Villas Boas, Howe etc. The hope is obviously that they do well but then that in turn leaves us in a muddle further down the line. You can't keep getting it right all the time. Maybe this list will include an old head wanting a shot at upsetting the order in the PL. Better chance of retaining/attracting players - Van gaal, Pellegrini, Bielsa. I'm not sure what I want. At what point do we stop getting our hearts broken?

We kissed away the "not getting our hearts broken" the minute we all started to agree that Adkins sacking was the right decision. Something the vast majority still agree with (albeit it with sadness on my part.)

Maybe an English manager like Howe might see it as more of a long term project rather than a route to Chelsea?

Jeremy Wilson has broken cover.

Saints have an offer on the table to Koeman and have had no approach from Everton yet.

If he talks to Everton they won't get drawn into a bidding war, they'll seek compensation and move on.

Our leading candidate is Eddie Howe.

Makes sense to me - no point in him being a lame duck manager for a year if he doesn't want to be here - also good that this has happened so soon after the end of the season. Give any new manager time to get bed in before preseason.
I'm now actually just expecting a duel press conference where we & Everton announce new managers at the Same time.
I like Howe, but there are also some other great managers available at the moment - I'm not the slightest bit worried. First team manager is just another department head under this board - was it Ralph or Cortese who put it that way? But it's true and I'm glad of it as now is as good time to replace him as we'll ever get.

My thoughts are we will be fine either way. Koeman has done a fine job, but in an excellent setup that is not 100% reliable on a great manager.

Positive:
Possibly the best tactical manager in the league (after Pelligrini possibly? Although not any more obviously)
Real presence as a manager, and has instant respect from players, fans and press
Clear ability under pressure
Can get the most out of average players (when I say average I mean get top half performances out of bottom half players, Shane Long as an example)

Cons:
Has left us with a large squad without any real stars (think Benitez at Liverpool), certainly advocated the quantity over quality - the opposite of Pochettino
Hasn't particularly trusted youth (although there's another question around the quality of our youth at the moment)
His abrasive management style seems to have irritated some players

Can't agree with you there. I think Koeman has already left and Saints getting a new manager in will drag on for weeks and weeks with loads of really stupid names being mentioned before someone is finally appointed.

Then the players [who were always going to leave] will start to leave......
