To clarify when you look at the detail then something like 87% of what we wanted happened in the EU and our vote is quite significant. We had autbourity hence why we don't follow shengen or adopt the euro.
The language part, and I am not saying you or my FIL, has generally been around nationality and sovereignty rather than economic and it is my belief that this has lead to the emergence of the far right. It's a very subtle change in language but farages language is being used by the like of le Penn and the far right in Germany with success. Its changed from outright and blanatant racism to pride and sovereignty but the same motives behind it.
Further to that the notion of "our country" won't really exist outside the EU because from the already existing NATO and use of French carriers to the demands the likes of India or China make with any trade deals we will always have to bow to external demands, the EU actually gave us authourity but we don't see it
