I totally agree about Watkins, all this is in my earlier posts. As is my reasoning as to why gung ho football doesn't win you internation tournaments. History shows that you either have to be far and away the standout side or your side has to be built on a strong defence.
I dont share the opinion on Venables. I remember a pretty average period under his tenure. Maybe the Dutch game is the one we all remember. The performance against Switzerland was awful, against scotland not much better and arguably we did not deserve to win. Spain I thought were better and we did it on penalties. Role reversed against Germany. In a home tournament I think it was underwhelming.
Go back to pre tournament friendlies and it was pretty dire stuff a lot of the time. Perhaps if he had qualifying games it may have beem better. But overall my memories of Venables arent very positive, and certainly much less than my memories under Southgate.
And I seem to remember venables changing his formation around to get Ince back in his side for the semi final

I would say there's obvious benefits to having a manager from the country he is managing, but to make it mandatory seems ott mate. Have a nice cuppa, it'll all be ok in the end.
If England won a tournament with a foreign manager, it would always be "England invented the game but can't win without help from outside".
I 100% agree. Every nation should should have coaches from their country.
I just find it more balanced to be coached by an Englishman, if you are only allowed to pick English players. Seems to undermine the nature of international competition to me if the richest FA were to be able to buy Pep for example as then you are relying on a different nationality to contribute to a national success.
I think an individual would have to be particularly unhinged to object to citizenship making you eligible for call up to a particular national football team (in the same way that citizenship confers a variety of other rights within the state in question) so I find it hard to believe that extending that to the team's manager is antithetical to anything.

I guess on one hand I understand why some would want an English coach for England, I do as well (Howe), but I guess if the motivation is that it should be a hard rule, It makes me think about other rules we have for national eligibility, is it just that an organised body saying you're now eligible that makes it so or is there more to it than that?
