"Easy ride for defenders until Watkins came on" - that was Ian Wright
Sorry like, good management would be giving them a hard 90 mins surely?
That said, how often have we seen teams playing badly go on and win. Italy 82 , 2020, Argentina last World Cup.

Everyone was screaming for Toney to start because he won a header against Slovakia, Gordon to replace Foden (who ran the show today), Bellingham to be dropped etc.

You can’t really blame Southgate for starting his best players. Kane won the penalty and scored it he’s just not the same kind of striker as Watkins who offers something totally different.

Guess that's the debate, Is he not keeping the best ones until 70+ minutes? Regardless, seen a few tournaments when we play good football and don't progress, one thing I'll always applaud Southgate for is the spirit and mentality he has created in the group since he came in. Hated the Capello / Erickson years.

Great finish good subs . Shaw at half time and then Palmer and Watkins. Was hoping he would change it slightly earlier but hey he’s England manager and lives or dies by those decisions. Well done. Oh and a final to watch in Sorrento. :emoticon-0140-rofl::emoticon-0140-rofl: Mrs W will you find somewhere with it on. :emoticon-0136-giggl :1980_boogie_down:

There was a bloke phoned the sports bar on talkSPORT the other night, he said Watkins should be playing against Holland because he's a runner, will get in behind etc,and they pretty much laughed at him..... I hope he rings in tonight
Been saying it to my dad all night He’s said he didn’t know much about him. I said he’ll run between defenders into the gaps at pace and change the game. My dad just said ‘ bloody hell exactly what you described’

Watkins against tired legs definitely makes sense but I also see the point for starting him. This is the problem sometimes when you’ve got so much talent good players get left out. It’s not just England in this situation, all of the better nations have quality on the bench.

It’s all about utilising the squad and realistically most managers in his situation are going to start their best players. I don’t really like the bloke but you can’t knock him for not dropping his captain who’s just off the back of a season in which he’s scored about 50 goals in all competitions.

Sitting here in the dark, a bottle in my hand, got to be up for work for 7 tomorrow morning and I'm still trying to get my head around what I've just watched. From the group games when we didn't set the world alight, quarters, penalties against the Swiss and tonight. I'm Sunderland through and through and England comes second but tonight I'm just trying to take it all in. I watched 2 group games in Gran Canaria and even the wife wishes we were away for the final
