Is this still something that happens? I don't know how PE classes are currently run. Is he suggesting that it is still the case where girls go and play netball and boys play football? Or is the subtly in the part "just like the boys" - and I don't know what he means by that if it is anything more than just being able to play in the first place

BBC ...

“The FA's aim, in its Euro 2022 legacy report, is for 75% of schools to provide equal access for girls to play football within PE lessons by 2024. Only 63% of girls have the same access as boys to football currently“

There are still many schools where heavily “gendered” PE sessions are commonplace. Girls do dance, gymnastics, netball. Boys do football, cricket, rugby. Sport curriculum provision is usually more skills-based than sports-based. It’s changing, but things like PSM are not statutory and are only voluntary for schools when really, they should be a national standard. After school sport provision will also be heavily gendered as often you can’t find appropriate staffing for older age groups. It would be massively helpful to external providers to fill gaps here but it’s bloody expensive to become licensed to provide those clubs and many get put off by the red tape and difficulty with safeguarding procedures.
