The election in the US is so divisive that they're both fighting over a small group of flip voters.
Biden lost that flip vote, so whoever takes over (seems likely Harris) will need to win them back.
It's not young liberals or blacks, it's blue collar workers who have flipped the most during the past 3 elections.

I've got no problem with her standing, I think she is far more physically capable for the job, with no disrespect to Biden intended. I never even realised she was as old as she was (59 years old) according to wiki. I feel more than comfortable with her being a president, albeit I'm still to read up on her policies. Sadly her mum won't see this moment in history as she died 15 years ago - her dad is still alive (85 years old) although I don't know how much contact she has with him, because her parents divorced when she was a young child, but he appears highly respected in Jamaica (Order of Merit). She's got a younger sister Maya (57 years old)....

Well we've sorted out British politics, so if we can get her to bin off Trump the world hopefully will be saner place.
This election is crucial imo for ensuring that a liberal progressive approach to politics is maintained across the US, Europe and the Middle East.
Thankfully here in the UK and France we’ve chosen that route, but in Europe we’ve got the Dutch, Germans, Hungarians and Italians embracing far right ideology
If Trump wins, he will cozy up to the right wing in Europe and he’ll throw Ukraine and Gaza to the wolves.

She’d be a far better president than Trump, but the GOP will tie her in with Biden’s policies (which have actually managed to get the US back on track with inflation, growth GDP and introduced a good healthcare package for Americans) and they will just say she’s Biden in another guise.
From a campaign perspective, the best thing the Dems could do is bring somebody in who the Republicans don’t know how to counter. It would also give those flip voters a chance to weigh up their options between Trump and a brand new candidate.
I think the US are less concerned with the novelty factor too. Unlike here where we favour stability and consistency and like to know the long term backgrounds of our politicians, the US have a history of voting for big personalities and ‘showmen’.

I am absolutely convinced the best candidate is Gavin Newsom, governor of Cali.
The problem with VPs is that they're usually considered a "stooge" to the sitting president and a continuation candidate. It's like if the PM resigns and the Chancellor steps in, you consider them one and the same.
So Trump can just continue with a similar rhetoric against Harris as he had against Biden and have similar results. As I have said on here previously, Harris is even further behind in the polls than Biden was, so she's got a mighty job on her hands if she wins the nomination.
I think that's a formality btw, Biden shouldn't have endorsed anyone.
