we have no accurate way of measuring the real number of new infections a day. We are only testing people ill enough to go to hospital, a tiny fraction of infections. Death rate are the only reliable measure I think.

Must confess that between childcare and the day job I've not actually had any time to properly read up on all of this, but if the protocol for actually getting tested stays the same, wouldn't number of new infections still be a valid indicator, despite not truly reflecting the actual number of cases? Will defer to you on this one however, as I really haven't properly read up on it. Other half is 'on the front line' as a doctor so I'm suddenly juggling a small person and the day job.

This side of the argument seems to be getting no traction, or even a hearing, anywhere other than the White House. It’s a shame because it is the real decision. To be honest I was sort of on this side to begin with, until I realised that if we let this rip the additional death toll might be enormous, and that the instant and total collapse of our health services (still a possibility) would be shattering.

Personally I suspect that the measures are mainly about avoiding the political disaster of a collapsed NHS rather than saving the vulnerable, and that they have calculated that we let the establishment get away with the entirely last financial crash which they were completely responsible for, so they are probably Thinking we’ll let them off with another ten years of misery for a rather better reason.

But will we?

The political landscape once we're over this crisis will be fascinating. Massive approval for Johnson at the moment, which is understandable, but I wonder what will happen when it's all over? Maybe Johnson, the 'wartime' PM, will get what his hero got in 1945 and people will again look for a more socialised economy.

And did it work?

Hard to say really. I have had less colds, but that may be more to do with now having annual flu jabs than the hand washing advice, which I didn't really follow as assiduously as I should have. Come to think of it, I had my first bad cold for ages about three weeks ago - sore throat, cough, but no fever. Who knows if this might have been a mild dose of Covid-19? The sooner the antibody tests are available, the better.

Enjoy the family time! I might well be wrong but that’s the impression I get. The stats seem all over the place, the UK is reporting only 135 people ‘recovered’ from the virus, while Germany has thousands.

Death toll + recession = revolution

Perhaps not.

i'd like to think that Trumps speech saying it will all be over by Easter was just a speech to give people a little hope to hold onto.

I also hope that Boris (let's face it, whether you like him or Tories or not) hasn't had an easy start. If he can provide enough to everyone during this crisis to keep people in their homes with food in their stomachs then they will probably repay by helping make this country Great again

Keep safe everyone

Trump will end up killing scores of people in the US.
The guy is only doing things that make him look good. He has no ability to predict that by Easter it will all be over, least of all because he's a twat not very intelligent. He is a bloody good liar.

I dont want to use the word ‘only’ but 28 today in England is encouraging. When i checked the Italian stats from 7th v ours i thought there would be many more. Fortunately it is actually a lower figure.
We need those test kits now so we can sed who has had it and immune.

If you really think the lockdown is about avoiding the political disaster of a collapsed nhs why is the rest of the world going in too

My mrs is showing symptoms which is really really worrying. She's not had any contact with anyone but i was working up until last Friday in an empty house with no contact. Driving in my van, I did fill up once on the Wednesday but wore the glove and sanitized my hands. I think if you are going to get it then you're going to get it, just depends on how serious it becomes for each individual. Will keep you posted.
