It's strange that people stress we shouldn't compare ourselves to other countries yet we are delivered a graph daily doing exactly that! Very bizarre
In the UK the death rate from coronavirus is 237 per million people, and we have conducted 7,101 tests per million people.
In New Zealand the death rate from coronavirus is 2 per million people and they have conducted 17,258 tests per million people.
Even accounting for different ways of recording deaths (and the UKs is higher because this is based only on hospital deaths) the gap is massive and won’t be closed.
If both countries had a population of 1 million for every 1 Kiwi who died of coronavirus 118.5 Brits would.
It’s not a function of population size.
New Zealand does not have any resources that we do not - quite the reverse. 86% of New Zealander’s live in urban areas, compared to 83% in the UK.
Sorry if you find this difficult to understand.
Ellers? Now up to 13 deliveries and 68 meals for the food bank......read into that what you will.
Funny story of the day is one old boy jokingly asked if I was a pirate ‘cos I was wearing my St Pauli/Skull and Crossbones T-shirt...
‘No’ I said, ‘I’m an anarchist and this is a German anarchist football team’.........spent 10 mins trying to explain to him what anarchism really is about and not to believe everything that he reads......
He still didn’t get it but nice fella![]()
With regards to LHR I totally agree. Why we are still letting in flights from Spain/Italy/US/China? they cant all be repatriation flights? The difference is NZ doesn't have a city like London which is one of the busiest international hubs in the world. The sheer volume of international flights that passes through Heathrow dwarfs anything NZ has. NZ is to an extent quite isolated and can totally isolate far easier as they have done.
That said, I think NZ got it right at every stage hence their far better control of the virus. Compare that to us with plenty of flights still landing every day at Heathrow and it's not hard to see why we have made such a hash of it. Add that to all the previously mentioned cock-ups and we look pretty poor but it is far from a like for like comparison...
Well they are the power in government Col, who else could you blame?
Corbyn ? Abbott ?
You are absolutely right Col, some of the scientists and experts have shown poor leadership, and possibly vbeen easily led into following a political path.
There was also been a little too much "competition" especially in the early stages in the two modelling camps Oxford vs Imperial, that gave rise to very different sceanarios
The one I really want to know about is the ventilator situation.
Reading about the ventilators yesterday in the lightweight scientific articles I could easily undersatand why some of the basic ones that have been made in response to the government call were not fit to purpose. So who the hell put those specifications out to the manufacturers in the first place...and no, not even I am that stupid to think it was Boris on the back of an envelope. The specifications were put out by an "expert", but not a real expert on ventilation design. So that is really something that needs to be accounted for.
One last thing is another thing that is a factor...the "youth" of the government. This government was only in power for a month or two before this blew up, their only real experience was in "getting Brexit down". There had been little time to bed in with the cicil service either. They were hugely inexperienced in running a country.
Add to that a really big confounding factor:-the Chief Medical officer Professor Witty had only taken over from Dame Sally Davis in September.
All I can say is that what I know of her...the CoVid19 virus probably would have taken a one look at her and left the country of its own accord.
If Sally Davis was still CMO things would have been different. She took no prisioners and actually could not give a @@@@ what people thought.
Sally Davis was phenomenal
What are you thinking Col?Or maybe the scientists weren't 'easily led down a political path', but just got some stuff wrong?
The problem it seems to me is that you don't get to be invited as a medical expert if you aren't prepared to be persuaded by the politicians to deliver the message they want you to. You have got there by having ambition and you don't want your spot in the limelight taken away. The idea that the three spokespersons put forward each day do not discuss beforehand and discuss a list of FAQs prepared by spin-doctors so they all come to the briefing with an independent mind strikes me as fanciful. The real difference between the experts and the politicians is that the experts are at least honest enough to say they don't know occasionally whereas the politicians feel they have to say something and are quite prepared to lie to give the impression that it is they who are winning..
When did coronavirus first come to the UK?
Having created a network using over 1,000 coronavirus genomes, researchers believe the pandemic kicked off some time between September 13 and December 7, and that three different strains have emerged.

What are you thinking Col?
If so, should we really be listening to them now still?

Do you know what Beth the more I dig around or research some of this stuff it becomes a minefield? I think I would like to know the truth of where it originated and when? Sadly I don't think I will ever get an answer. That is really interesting Ellers, although it does not really say much about the startling statement that there was an outbreak in this country between Sept-Dec 2019 (before the deadly outbreak in Whutan). If you look back early in this thread, you will find a post I made about having something so like CoVid in November of last year, that medics I know say they would have sent me to hospital. There were several other people who said they too had it on here.
I will dig around, there must be something somewhere with a little more scientific detail than Metro...(unless it is one of those Fake stories again, no I am not having a go. but there are so many of those at the moment)
I don't buy into it either. Powis yesterday was commanding and I can't see him being pushed around by Hancock.I know someone who trained Chris Whitty and he tells me he's an honourable man and is extremely competent and gifted.

Good point Sooper, but I think there is more too it than flights. Speed of action and thoroughness being the key differentiators. If all we do is come up with reasons why we can’t compare ourselves to places that are doing better I really fear for us.The difference is NZ doesn't have a city like London which is one of the busiest international hubs in the world. The sheer volume of international flights that passes through Heathrow dwarfs anything NZ has. NZ is to an extent quite isolated and can totally isolate far easier as they have done.
