If somebody walks away from a fight you might think him a coward or a wise man - it doesn't mean he is actually either one because only he knows why he walked away and when we say 'coward' or 'wise man' it says more about us than about him.
Around 400 people are found to have killed themselves in the UK every year; the vast majority are men and the real figure is probably much much higher as coroners traditionally try to find a reason to call it death by misadventure to avoid the stigma if possible... Each of these people are individuals with circumstances ranging from what we might consider 'petty' to ones where we cannot believe they stuck it out for so long.
There isn't a single view to be had an amongst their numbers will be cowards and brave men, foolish men and wise men... for most their circumstances remain private but for the few in the public eye it's inevitable that the details are going to be picked over and people are going to colour each one with their own philosophy and if we make a judgement will usually put them into one of three broad classes;
1) Coward - they could't face up to something they have done and have no thought for those left behind
2) Justified - usually those who've put up with pain over a long illness with little chance of any remission or someone under huge mental pressure
3) Cry For Help Gone Wrong - the person who cuts too deep or swallows the wrong mixture
So... MR believes Gary Speed falls into catagory 1) and I guess most of the Newcastle posters would place him into catagory 2) [?] - but this doesn't mean either view is true a it also means both views are equally valid/invalid.
This is an internet forum about football and he was a footballer we're all free to express our opinions; this will be a very sensitive 'no go' area for some but not for others - there is no single line over which people cross... or if there is it seems very wiggly and elastic at times.
The accusations of illegal behavior are a different matter though and we've recently seen people posting on Twitter getting huge fines for publishing liable through a public medium. The person who claims manager 'x' is a *****phile actually in a follow up post claimed they had proof. That person is sailing very, very close to the wind and if anyone really has passed it across to Northumbria police, as they intimated, they will be obliged to investigate it.
Bloody hell mate that was a hard read.
Glad I did mind.
Some very pertinent points.
The thing I have said over and over again, if this had nothing to do with an ex United footballer they wouldn't give two ****s.
And as you have so ably pointed out, my voicing an opinion on suicide in this case isn't actionable by law. (Or even upsetting to any right minded person.)
I have had Mags saying I should be put on suicide watch or killed before this incident.
Water ducks back comes to mind.
The accusations of *****philia are actionable by law though.
