Just by the way on the wages v transfer fee argument, people realise that 20k extra a week is only another 1m paid on a player, yes? So if we could sign a striker for, say, 5 million instead of 9 million, we could offer them an extra 80k a week to convince them to come here, and still only be paying the same outlay as the 9m striker.
And upset all the other players at the same time who are now on relatively lower wages!

A few years ago Crystal Palace players were on low wages. Last season I think £40k per week was their maximum. Now Cabaye is rumoured to be on £100k per week.

We should have had an incentive scheme. Paid him according to the sweat he generated.

Or kilometres ran! :P

I can't help but feel if he'd scored that goal against Spurs he may have come good..

That game was just about as well as we played all season, in the best formation. Then Ramirez got a red and it all went to ****.

I think players are sensible. If they see somebody with a lot of skill working hard they can accept the extra wages but when they see players who dont try or are not very effective they will resent it.

All strikers struggle, regardless of whether they are British or not. Other than the really amazing strikers like Shearer, Wright, Owen, Fowler and dare I say it Rhodes there are very few who knock them in season after season. If I was a chairman who owned a club and a striker scored 20 goals I'd sell him like a shot and look for the next one. Strikers rarely score +20 goals on back to back seasons.

So my stance on Gray stands. At £4m get him, but at £7m don't touch, especially with add ons. He might score 20 for Brentford, but we should be looking at the lad they are replacing him with. Now that would be a story.

Strikers have periods out of form - they don't have full seasons out of form. Proschwitz as an example tumbled down the leagues - he couldn't adapt to the pace. He's now back at Paderborn after failing here/Brentford/Coventry.

After 29 games and 13 goals at Peterborough Dwight Gayle had a big money move to Palace. Prior to that he was non league - similar to Gray.

Yeah, let's sign another foreign wildcard striker on the basis that every single one we have signed so far has been a failure - that's a terrific idea. <doh><doh><doh>

We will never get Gray for £4m - look at prices recently for proven Championship strikers McCormack/Gayle/Austin/Ings (Rhodes rumoured at £12m). I'm sure if we don't sign him for £7m I'm sure somebody else will.

£4m <laugh><laugh>

Crystal Palace's English striker Dwight Gayle, 25, is set to turn down a £6m move to Championship side Bristol City.
So why are we not after him ?
A better player than Andre Gray & cheaper ?
Brentford are asking silly money for him & he's really not worth it

He'll also be on a Premier League wage. Which when you factor that in with the £6m transfer fee, he'll be more expensive than Gray. Plus Gayle has said he wants to stay in the PL and Norwich are interested. That's why.
