Southend need to know their place and when a club like QPR and Hull come in for one of your players for a big sum of money by League One standards then you can't stand in his way of an opportunity to the top flight. By all accounts Bentley could be Premier League standard in the future. The chances of Southend being promoted aren't a guarantee and even then their chances of getting to the top flight are minimal.

We have to know our place when a bigger club come in for one of our players and so do Southend. Southend are trying to prove they are no push overs but in reality I think it just makes them look bitter and spiteful. That kind of money for Southend at that level could really help them out in the long run.

Erm... no, they really shouldn't 'know their place' and they are not 'bitter and spiteful'.


What do you think we would've been like had someone from a higher league come in for Elliott after he scored 27 in League One? You'd be telling them to piss off, not just bend over and take it.

It's posts like this which make it look like we're all complete arseholes. It wasn't long ago that we were in a very similar position to Southend and they should get every last penny they can out of Bentley!

I think it's unfair of them to step in the way of a move to what is currently the biggest club in the football league who temporarily find ourselves very short on quality, other clubs may pay more for him but will they be as good for his development and career?

I hope I've been whooshed & that was all tongue in cheek because that's the biggest loads of claptrap I've ever read on here.
 
Probably a daft question - but do Championship teams still have to adhere to the "25 man squad" rule that we had in the Premier League? If so, it has to be hard to leave out names such as CJM, Luer and Matty Dixon who have impressed during pre-season, and definitely did so yesterday.
 
For people offended by my post need to read the whole thing and see it context and trying to be politically correct.

There is a food chain in football. Like it or not. We have our place in it and so does every other club.

- Southend have a capacity of 12k as apposed to 25k
- Southend is a town with a population of 177k ranked 101st in the country as apposed to 257k and ranked 58th
- We as a club have a better infrastructure, potential and facilities.
- Southend have never been in the top flight.

Say if Everton, Southampton, Aston Villa, Newcastle came in for one of our players with a decent offer then I would have to say it would only be fair to allow that player to move onto those clubs because we have our place in the football food chain and those teams rank higher in it than we do. Why stand in the way of a player who could go on to better themselves.

And if Tottenham, Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool want to go in for players at Everton, Southampton, Aston Villa, Newcastle then the same applies.

The same applies if Southend want to go in for players at some League 2 clubs.


Southend 50/1 to win the league
7th Favourite for relegation
5th from bottom of likely promotion contenders

We are third favorites for winning and promotion.

I'm not saying clubs should be bent over a barrel and ripped off but £1m + for an unproven goalkeeper and an inferior level seems like a fair price. Standing in the way of a move to a superior level seems like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

It's painful to watch your best players get cherry picked by clubs in a more advantageous position but it happens. We did it to Sheff Utd for Maguire, we are doing it now to Brentford but we have just had to see Chester and Brady leave.

So don't see what I say as arrogant, but merely the harsh reality of football.

The "food chain" is nonsense.

In another season Southend might be in a better position than we are. Bournemouth are in a better position than we are now.

Leeds should always be able to buy anyone they want due to the fact they are a big club.

Pish.

The obvious thing then according to that would be to split it into leagues based on what you consider the differences and stop promotion/relegation.

I think the dream of football and what made some at least follow it in the past is that a smaller club could do very well and develop a history for themselves. Infrastructure for anywhere can change with investment. Some things aren't quite as static as you make out, though it may well feel that way at the top end of the first tier (and why that's so boring) elsewhere things can be more fluid.
