Chester will struggle a lot in the air, didn't he have that tiny midget Zigic's pants down? Chester doesn't have a weakness, he's like footballs ninja gaiden.
Many fans dont have any fears over James Chester at all. Just the hissy fitters more like. Chester is more like a rolls royce of a defender. Has the old flicker but overall just pers along smoothly.
No, Zigic had his own pants down, he should have tried turning up to training properly. Chester does have a weakness in the air, which is compounded when he's playing alongside another midget centre half. Watford and West Ham on 2011/12 were the best examples of teams targetting it, in the 2nd West Ham game in particular we were punished for Chester and Cooper both being smaller defenders. The thing is when we're defending next season it's going to be the whole team defending deep. We'll end up with a flat 5 that stops teams getting in behind us by closing down all the gaps for runners or passes to be played through. In the middle of that 5 we're going to have 2 bigger defenders and Chester, as well as 2 defensive midfielders dropping in to help (Meyler being one who was given exactly that job on occasions when we came up against big strikers last season). Our vulnerability to crosses should be limited to ones coming from from the flanks 10 yards or so infront of the 18 yard line. Coming from our left side Hobbs will be between the crosser and the target striker, with Faye the man in the middle so it will take a near perfect cross to get it to the striker at the back post (that would be exploiting the lack of height Chester has). We're more likely to struggle with the same kind of crosses coming from our right side, where Chester will be the nearest centre back. You can either tell Meyler (who fortunately tends to play to the right when Quinn is in midfield with him) to cover the issue so that Chester covers Elmo for a ball being knocked past him, or you can instruct Aluko/Boyd to track back down that side to help Elmo eliminate the danger of the double up in the first place. Either way it's not a massive drama so long as others are good in the air. Going up another 4 or 5 levels from the one we're going for, Cannavaro was hardly sacrificed for teams to play someone like Stam just because the latter was better in the air was he. He was always paired up with someone like that to compensate for his midget nature, and he didn't suffer much as a result of being targetted in the air.
Some of the best ever centre backs have been less than 6 feet tall. Baresi, Cannavaro, Puyol to name just three. Its the art of reading the game over height. Chezzy might be 5-10 but he reads the game very well. We need to keep him for sure.
Media saying that Chester will put pen to paper this week on a new 4 year deal. plus... Figeroa and McCann could be the next confirmed names.?
Great examples of short defenders: Franz Beckenbauer - 5ft11 Gaetano Scirea - 5ft10 Carles Puyol - 5ft10 Fabio Cannavaro - 5ft9 Franco Baresi - 5ft9 Daniel Passarella - 5ft8 Billy Wright - 5ft8 There are probably loads more.
Is Chester's contract ever going to get signed? This is his 3rd holiday now! (unless he signed it today like Oxley did) @Rea_Simone Just dropped chezy ofd for his trip to vegas!! ☀ jealousssss
I don't know, but if I was negotiating for a pay rise I wouldn't be going away on 3 holidays in the space of a month.
Cheers Macca..Quality post.. Add to that Claudio Gentile at 5'10"....The only player I've seen who wanted to change shirts during a game...Dirty but very sly with it.
He hasn't! He had a week on Santorini with Miss Simone, then she went to Tenerife with the girls, now he's off to Vegas with the lads! ....and if it's the same as last year the lads all bomb off to Miami for the basketball as well later in the Summer.
