Well not on the M3 no, that's a dumb idea. But I guess there's always going to be a period where this causes more disruption to drivers whilst people transition to using bikes.
But yeah as you say, the schemes need to be done in the right places. City centres are perfect tbh, as they lend themselves so well to cycling and already it's probably quicker to get about on a bike than it is in a car. Main routes in and out of cities, not so much, but they still need to have some cycle provision. I would say it would be better to build a dedicated cycle path separate from the road where you can.
Yeah that's the point I'm making. I'm not against the general idea of making cycle routes available just that halfing the capacity of that particular road is moronic. It's literally the first road you're on as you come off the M3 into Soton, smacks of decision makers wanting to be seen to be doing the 'right' thing without actually thinking it through.
A park and ride for the city centre would probably be a good idea too but that's a different debate.
