Piskie doesn't strike me as the kind of biker to run red lights or go on the pavement, or do wheelies.

Anyway, I'm all for Boris ploughing money into bike schemes. I generally think he's a bumbling twat, but you have to give credit if it's something you support. <ok>

Yeh I think it's a decent incentive. I'll have that £50 to help fix up the breaks on my kid's bike which has been forgotten about in the shed for 2 years. Either that or go towards buying a new one.

I take it it's not linked to any particular retailers bcos I can't be doing with Halfords, utter ****.

I think the bike shop has to be signed up to the scheme. Halfords will def be one of them. But loads of indie’s should sign up too

I can't see why any bike shop wouldn't sign up to it especially under current circumstances. I'd prefer to try an independent, only because I've always been disappointed buying bikes at Halfords.

Its swings and roundabouts mate.
Woman I work with brother in law spent over £2,000 on an e bike at a local bike shop
He went to them because they said they did servicing on e bikes .
When it didnt work he took it back and they dudnt have a clue .
His engineer retired father in law knew more about them

Yeah Halfords are ****e overall. That said their Voodoo bikes were really good, especially for the money. But you are much better off spending your money at an indie. The blokes in there will be bike enthusiasts and riders themselves, rather than some chump who's just applied for a job in a chain store. So they'll know their stuff and often look to save you money, rather than Halfords who will just fit stuff off of their shelves in the whole 'upselling' ethos of high st shops.

They've started to put bike lanes on loads of roads in Soton. Including changing one of the busiest roads in / leading out of the city from two lanes to one. Utterly stupid ****s as it will just create more stationary traffic.

Think the idea is to get more people out of their cars and onto a bike.

Like I say it's one of the main routes out of the city. Don't think people will be riding a pushy up the M3 somehow.

One of those things that sounds good in principle but hasn't been thought through and is idiotic in reality. It's already one of the worst roads in Soton for stationary traffic (which is terrible for the environment) so halfing its capacity is only gonna make it worse.

I know someone who drives it every day at peak times and they've only seen 5 cyclists using it in about 6 weeks.

Well not on the M3 no, that's a dumb idea. But I guess there's always going to be a period where this causes more disruption to drivers whilst people transition to using bikes.

But yeah as you say, the schemes need to be done in the right places. City centres are perfect tbh, as they lend themselves so well to cycling and already it's probably quicker to get about on a bike than it is in a car. Main routes in and out of cities, not so much, but they still need to have some cycle provision. I would say it would be better to build a dedicated cycle path separate from the road where you can.
