Anyone here have a Virgin Media package, or at least the TV? I'm trying to free myself from the shackles of Sky, and I'm wondering how good the alternatives are. I had Virgin broadband at Uni and it was definitely the best I've had, so if the TV is just as good or better than Sky then I'm definitely making the switch.

I have barebones Virgin TV in my house at Uni. It does us more than enough.

I'm looking at the TV/broadband/phone package for £38 a month. 60MB broadband and 175+ TV channels with 24 HD channels. It's cheaper than the equivalent Sky package, so it looks like it's got to be the best option.

LOL! Forest have appointed McCleish as their new manager. Oh dear - the fans won't be happy.

We have Virgin Media, we used to have Sky and it's essentially the same in terms of channels but there are a few cool features on Sky which are lacking on Virgin, for example the ability to set reminders or to automatically change channel when a programme starts. Vit.rgin media has a lot less in the way of music channels and radio stations, although I don't know if that'd be a big issue for you. Also apparently you can record a film that's on Sky Movies on demand, on virgin media you only basically stream it. Also I prefer the colour blue to the colour red. There's some other things too which Virgin media doesn't have which sky does have but I can't remember them

Virgin has some if those features you mention such as automatically changing channel when your programme starts. V+ does almost everything Sky does, just not as well. It's good for the money but can be frustrating when it doesn't work. And customer service is so bad It's beyond a joke. The internet is the same, works brilliantly most of the time, but sometimes ****s up. I pay about 50 a month for all three services and get the good internet, and the tv package that is one step above normal (i get ESPN).

I don't know much about their Tivo box but I've heard It's good.

I'm buggered as I only have an old 625 line black and white analogue telly which for some reason I can't find a signal for anymore. I've been on the roof moving the ariel around to no effect.

The very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov and I just go to bed early these days.

Ah yes, the powers that be have decided to shut off the analogue signals. It's all about digital TV now. Seems like yesterday that we just had four channels, five on a good day.

I've had Virgin broadband before and I have to say the customer service was so much better than Sky's. I spent 20 minutes on hold with Sky today, and then got cut off during the call. On Virgin I would have had it sorted in 5 minutes. Also the connection I had at Uni was exceptional, and we got a free crate of beers every time we recommended it to friends.

Freesat! It's the way forward one lump sump then no monthly payments! Decent range of channels with a few hd channels as well! You know your way round the internet to find anything that is given to you like sports or films. Although it has some film channels and some very odd sports channels. I really do recommend it.

Godders has brought back some old memories of the days when you had to turn the TV on 10 minutes before you wanted to watch it, so that it would be nicely warmed up. Does anyone remember the programme that Southern TV started their broadcast every day with, just before 5 o'clock, with shots of various landmarks like the Needles?

Sadly, as only a nipper, my earliest television memories are of this:
