A few to my mind:

The Beatles
The Kinks
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Pink Floyd
Deep Purple
Rolling Stones
Queen
David Bowie
Eric Clapton
The Police
Genesis
Oasis
Elton John
Iron Maiden
The Jam
Duran Duran
The Specials
The Sex Pistols
The Smiths
Massive Attack
Radiohead
Portishead
Prodigy
Chemical Brothers
Basement Jaxx

There are others that people might argue with like Coldplay, Madness, The Clash, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Dire Straits, Gary Numan, The Eurythmics, Blur, Muse, Stone Roses, Depeche Mode, Jeff Beck, Amy Winehouse, George Michael.
Yeah deffo down to taste, your list is a mix of stuff I like and overrated garbage.<laugh>
A lot of 1or 2 album wonders there as well.

My experience and same with a lot of my mates too.

They lost a lot of their energy with the odd exception which was what I liked.

When your first albums that good you're always going to struggle to match / beat it. That debut album thread is a good example - how many of those bands made a better second album? Not many in my opinion.

True.

It usually stems from the fact bands have been together and toured for a long time before getting signed.

The first album is essentially the best they have to that point.

From then on albums are more or less written from scratch.

Some bands keep it up.

Out of the ones where I own/have heard the record:

Sabbath followed it up Paranoid.

Led Zeppelin released Zeppelin No.2

Overrated garbage? Like who?

Not all of those in that lists are ones I like but a good few of them.

Name the 1 or 2 albums wonders.

Ironic as I think Arctic Monkeys are a classic example of that.

It's as very strange science eh? You get others who make a great album and then it's four or five more before they match / surpass it. The Cure's a good example for me. Disintegration is a phenomenal album.

I've only ever listened to a few singles of theirs if I'm honest.

But yeah 'second album syndrome' effects a lot of bands especially if they believe their own hype/get lazy/ get too wasted and stoned to be productive!

You're not by any chance thinking of the Stone Roses with that comment are you? <whistle>

I'm biased with the Cure. Got tickets for their 40th anniversary gig in July and am like a kid at Christmas!

Oh nice one!

Nah I know The Cure.

My favourites are probably 'Love Cats' and I also like 'Friday I'm in Love'.

I've not been to a gig in ageeeees.

Music argument.

I have to find your list again.

Massive Attack one album wonder.
Radiohead, one album wonder and garbage.
Think you mentioned Coldplay and I really hate Coldplay.
Chemical brothers were in there, 2 album's and that was it.
<cheers>

Found it.

Duran Duran are just ****.
Portishead one album but good.
Basement Jaxx had a moment but that's it.
