The detection of gravitational waves from the birth of a black hole arrived two seconds before any light from the blast was emitted. This means we had time to turn telescopes all over the world towards the event to view it happening and analyse the light revealing a wealth of new information. We also now know that elements such as gold and platinum are created in the merger of neutron stars.
