I've not followed the story closely but he didn't assault her did he? Whether we like it or not whatever physical acts performed were consensual, albeit following the online grooming, which is probably the most heinous part of the affair. I wonder how many 15 year olds would actually identify as a child, actually I don't as I know none would.
The law states that an underage child cannot legally give consent. Therefore any sexual contact he instigated is an assault. You don't have to be violent to sexually assault a child.
That's precisely the problem these days a 15 year old girl can look 20, it really is difficult to tell.

I don't think that option is available in the UK. Serious point though. How do you rehabilitate a sex offender to guarantee that re-offending does not take place.
Providing the other party is a willing participant it can't be deemed an assault. At 15 you may not legally be able to give consent but that doesn't prevent you participating voluntarily, it should however have stopped him. What Johnson did was absolutely wrong and he deserves a fitting punishment. Personally I stick by the fact that no 15 year old would consider themself a child, no matter what the law says. It's such a murky subject though.
Willing participant or not, the law stands. He groomed her through exploiting his fame, giving her gifts, and getting her to a point where the sexual activity took place. He has been found guilty of sexual assault on a child. It doesn't matter whether the girl considers herself an adult or a child, the law is the law and Johnson knowingly broke it.

Prosecuting, Kate Blackwell QC, read messages to the court which are alleged to have been sent after the meeting.
The jury heard Johnson spoke about the meeting, saying: “It was class - just wanted to get your jeans off.”
The girl replied: “Next time haha”
Johnson is then alleged to have responded: “I will last 10 seconds tho lol”
Four days after the meeting, the England international searched 'legal age of consent' online, it was claimed.
Ms Blackwell told the court this was not because of worry over his actions but because of his 'intention to go even further with the teenager'.
The court had previously heard the 15-year-old girl was a Sunderland fan who 'idolised' Johnson and would wait to have pictures taken with him outside the Stadium of Light following home games.
The jury heard the teenager later added Johnson on Facebook and the pair began exchanging messages on social media.

The footballer is said to have asked her: “You in the last year of school?”

When discussing New Year’s Eve plans on December 31 last year, the teenager told him she was going to a family party, the court heard.
“Are you allowed to drink?”, Johnson allegedly asked.
He is also claimed to have asked the 15-year-old: “Where do you go out?”
She replied: “I am not old enough to go out haha.”

The teenager told him: “No one believes I am just 15.”
The court heard he then asked her when her birthday was and she made it clear she didn't turn 16 for almost another year.
The jury was told the former Manchester City star then made arrangements to meet her in a car park in County Durham on January 17 to give her a signed football.
The court was told of other messages the prosecution claims Johnson sent in the build-up to the alleged meeting.
Johnson is said to have asked: “Are you going to be forward with me?”

Johnson allegedly said: “You know what or do you need me to show you?”

Following the pair’s alleged 20-minute meeting, the court was told the pair exchanged messages again.
Johnson is alleged to have said: “Thought I would have got a thank you kiss for the shirt.”
The girl replied: “Didn’t ask.”
The prosecution said Johnson the replied: “Well I’ll come get one.”
Johnson is later alleged to have asked: “Am I only getting a kiss?”
Success: Johnson has been capped 12 times for England
The girl replied: “Depends what you’re asking for.”
The jury heard Johnson replied: “Depends what you’re up for - a little bit more than kissing. A bit of feeling.”
They are alleged to have met for in Johnson's Range Rover days later.
The Sunderland-born winger started his career at Middlesbrough and also had loan spells at Watford and Leeds United.
He moved to Manchester City in 2010 and was then sold to Sunderland for £10 million in 2012.

‘The truth broke my heart’: Adam Johnson’s ex-girlfriend Stacey Flounders opens up about hearing the devastating evidence in his child sex trial
She accompanied Johnson to Bradford Crown Court through most of the trial but it was revealed halfway through that they had split.

According to the Daily Mirror, Miss Flounders told friends she went to the trial to ‘find answers’ but added ‘the truth broke my heart’.
Today Johnson was preparing for time behind bars after the trial ended this week and he was convicted of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
Judge Jonathan Rose left the disgraced footballer in little doubt about the punishment that awaits him when he returns to court in two weeks' time to be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court.
The judge told him: 'You must understand that when you return here at the end of March you will receive a substantial prison sentence.'
Adam Johnson shook his head in the dock yesterday and gasps went up from the public gallery as he was found guilty of one charge and cleared on another.
Johnson has been found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child and cleared of another count. He will also be sentenced for grooming and kissing the girl
Miss Flounders showed no emotion as the verdicts were returned after the jury spent more than nine hours deliberating.
Previously she gave evidence to the court and insisted she would 'remain friends' with her ex.
She wiped away tears as she described how the 28-year-old had told her 'everything' about kissing a 15-year-old girl when he returned home after being questioned by police.
Asked if he talked about other things during their heart-to-heart, she said: 'The other women that he cheated on me with.'
Miss Flounders was then asked by Orlando Pownall QC, defending, if the sportsman named the women.
She replied: 'Just one. He wouldn't tell me the other names.' When asked how many there were, she said: 'Quite a few.'
Miss Flounders told the jury she had initially stuck by Johnson after his arrest because he was 'honest' with her and she knew he was 'telling the truth'.
But, when asked about the future of their relationship, she said: 'We're just going to remain friends.'
In two further confirmations of their split, Miss Flounders dramatically admitted to the jury that she saw no future in their relationship.
Johnson's denial of the charge meant the young victim was put through two gruelling days of cross-examination last month, during which she regularly broke down in tears.
In a emotional statement released after the verdicts, Johnson's young victim said the build-up to the trial has been 'the hardest year of my life'.
She said: 'I've had to face so much abuse after he claimed his innocence. I was made out to be a liar, if anything, I held things back because I didn't want all of this to come out.
'What happened in his car has turned my life upside down. I have lost all of my confidence. My school work has suffered.

The prosecution claimed Johnson then asked for a kiss before putting his hand down her jeans.
Prosecuting, Kate Blackwell QC, read messages to the court which are alleged to have been sent after the meeting.
The jury heard Johnson spoke about the meeting, saying: “It was class - just wanted to get your jeans off.”
The girl replied: “Next time haha”

Four days after the meeting, the England international searched 'legal age of consent' online, it was claimed.
Ms Blackwell told the court this was not because of worry over his actions but because of his 'intention to go even further with the teenager'.
The court had previously heard the 15-year-old girl was a Sunderland fan who 'idolised' Johnson and would wait to have pictures taken with him outside the Stadium of Light following home games.
The jury heard the teenager later added Johnson on Facebook and the pair began exchanging messages on social media.

When discussing New Year’s Eve plans on December 31 last year, the teenager told him she was going to a family party, the court heard.

The court heard he then asked her when her birthday was and she made it clear she didn't turn 16 for almost another year.
The jury was told the former Manchester City star then made arrangements to meet her in a car park in County Durham on January 17 to give her a signed football.
The court was told of other messages the prosecution claims Johnson sent in the build-up to the alleged meeting.

The teenager messaged Johnson to say she was drinking vodka, Ms Blackwell told the court.
“It takes away the nerves of meeting people at the party”, she said.
The jury was told Johnson replied: “I thought you meant something else.”
The girl asked: “What?”
Johnson allegedly said: “You know what or do you need me to show you?”

Following the pair’s alleged 20-minute meeting, the court was told the pair exchanged messages again.
Johnson is alleged to have said: “Thought I would have got a thank you kiss for the shirt.”
The girl replied: “Didn’t ask.”
The prosecution said Johnson the replied: “Well I’ll come get one.”
Johnson is later alleged to have asked: “Am I only getting a kiss?”

Adam Johnson’s devastated ex-girlfriend has opened up about the emotional damage his child sex trial has caused her.
She accompanied Johnson to Bradford Crown Court through most of the trial but it was revealed halfway through that they had split.

According to the Daily Mirror, Miss Flounders told friends she went to the trial to ‘find answers’ but added ‘the truth broke my heart’.
Today Johnson was preparing for time behind bars after the trial ended this week and he was convicted of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
Judge Jonathan Rose left the disgraced footballer in little doubt about the punishment that awaits him when he returns to court in two weeks' time to be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court.
The judge told him: 'You must understand that when you return here at the end of March you will receive a substantial prison sentence.'

Miss Flounders showed no emotion as the verdicts were returned after the jury spent more than nine hours deliberating.
Previously she gave evidence to the court and insisted she would 'remain friends' with her ex.
She wiped away tears as she described how the 28-year-old had told her 'everything' about kissing a 15-year-old girl when he returned home after being questioned by police.
Asked if he talked about other things during their heart-to-heart, she said: 'The other women that he cheated on me with.'
Miss Flounders was then asked by Orlando Pownall QC, defending, if the sportsman named the women.
She replied: 'Just one. He wouldn't tell me the other names.' When asked how many there were, she said: 'Quite a few.'
Miss Flounders told the jury she had initially stuck by Johnson after his arrest because he was 'honest' with her and she knew he was 'telling the truth'.
But, when asked about the future of their relationship, she said: 'We're just going to remain friends.'
In two further confirmations of their split, Miss Flounders dramatically admitted to the jury that she saw no future in their relationship.
Johnson's denial of the charge meant the young victim was put through two gruelling days of cross-examination last month, during which she regularly broke down in tears.
In a emotional statement released after the verdicts, Johnson's young victim said the build-up to the trial has been 'the hardest year of my life'.
She said: 'I've had to face so much abuse after he claimed his innocence. I was made out to be a liar, if anything, I held things back because I didn't want all of this to come out.
'What happened in his car has turned my life upside down. I have lost all of my confidence. My school work has suffered.
