Next season is going to be a real joke when they have VAR in the Premier League.

Watching the first half of Tottenham v Man City, the referee goes to review a penalty decision and gives what most people would consider a dubious penalty to Man City after the ball hits Danny Rose on the arm as he is falling to the ground. Without VAR, the referee was not going to give anything but because there is VAR, all the players surround him – that will be every marginal decision next season. They will kick off at 3pm and finish at 5:30pm!

Aguero then puts the penalty at a nice height for Lloris to save, which many would see as poetic justice; however, why did the referee not go and look at the video replay of the penalty and see how many players encroached in the penalty area? There were three or four players less than five yards from Aguero when he kicked the ball. When Lloris’ save rebounded back into the field of play, there was somebody there to clear it.

You'll have to forgive me if this one has already been mentioned.... but footballers that hide their mouths while speaking.

It's gone beyond just before they take a set piece... to just at any stage during a stoppage in the game.

As if anyone is gaining a palpable advantage even if they bothered to analyse it?

An iconic landmark has sadly burnt down, well almost.

    Total have offered £100m
Others have offered a further £500m
Over night £.5bn raised to repair a "building", yet people starve, cant pay bills, cant get treatement to save lives.
I am no bleeding heart liberal but for me WTF is going on here.

Wasn't it quiet an old building anyway. And Macron said the Brexiteers were living in the 1950s.

You can just see him clutching at this as a straw to try and reunite France and Europe. Quite a pathetic little man.

Sadly, I was watching Notre Dame burn when I got a text from a distraught French friend. That Notre Dame was burning in Holy week did appear to be beyond the pale. I tried to make light of it by suggesting that this was God siding with the gilets jaune by torching the Old Lady of Paris so that Macron would have to cancel his televised address to the nation.

It is not the first Gothic masterpiece that has burned and will not be the last: wood and lead roofing, leaded glass windows – materials from hundreds of years ago that would never get past the authorities in the 21st Century. Many of the world’s great Gothic buildings have a history of fire.

It is not the first time that Notre Dame has burned; although I believe that the last serious fire was five hundred years ago. The spire was less than two hundred years old but is going to be some engineering job to replace given its weight and size. Even with modern technology, they must be looking at more than a decade of restoration here.

I cannot remember a similar outpouring of grief when extensive damage was done to York Minster back in the 1980s or Windsor Castle back in the 1990s but I think we reserve our wailing in the streets for divorcees killed in car crashes in Paris, not national architectural monuments.

With regard to the pledges of money towards restoration, the French State will welcome this because technically France owns Notre Dame, not the Catholic Church. When Tusk piped up with his European solidarity nonsense, nobody thought to point out to him all the EU safety regulations that were being flaunted, just like they are across the continent.

I am certainly a Liberal, but not type 'bleeding heart', for sure, and so I agree with most of the above comments on ancient structures. However, Macron does indeed make himself look like a 'pathetic little man' with this erroneous comment. The Brexit people, M. Macron, aren't just living in the 1950's (I mean 'Rock and Roll' and the entertaining 'Skiffle' groups were on the go then, so things were not that bad :emoticon-0100-smile) but are, in many ways, living in the time of Queen Victoria and pre-'Raj', so do try to be more accurate with your Trump-like comments, Monsieur le Président.

This is the world. While an estimated 16,000 children die daily from hunger related issues, I waste money on personal pleasures I can do without. I don't think I'm alone.

So Macron talks about the damage to a French historical and cultural icon and receives support, sympathy and pledges of money to rebuild.

Brexiteers Talk of the loss of British Culture and Identity and are branded xenophobic racists who live in the past.

Trump wants to close the border to Mexico to stop the 130,000 illegal immigrants crossing into the USA each month and is demonized for it.

Ah carry on my fearless neo-liberal beauties, one day the whole world will be a multi-culti hotchpotch overrun with Muslims. Elysium indeed.

(Perhaps the slum dogs in St Denis can have a whip round and collect enough to build a mosque on the site of Notre Dame, cementing Paris at the heart of liberal, tolerant, forward-looking Europe. I’m sure Juncker and co will chuck in a few Euros <laugh>).

Now now Mr. 'OddDog', no need for such sarcasm! <laugh>. I for one am no neo-Liberal, just a Liberal and proud of it. I am certainly no 'beauty' either (more an 'ancient structure' nowadays). Liberal or not, I have always been 100% behind proper border controls and have never been in favour of the open-borders "Schengen Agreement" of 1985. On the Sovereignty issue too, feel that what the EU countries should have done is to have really 'gone for' Brussels years ago to let EU member countries themselves to decide on Sovereignty issues. But, no, too many were just not interested?

I think (hope) people are slowly waking up Swanny. If you can find it, there was a really interesting article on the Tagesschau website yesterday about the Bundespolizei at Frankfurt airport, the police force charged with carrying out deportation of immigrants whose asylum claims have been rejected. On the day of the report, there were something like 75 deportations planned but only about half could be carried out due to the deportees (all young males referenced in the article) using various forms of violence against either themselves or others such that the captain of the plane refused to have them on board. In one case 2 officers had to escort one young man all the way back to Chad, all at taxpayers expense.

Good grief, Oddy, that is terrible. Had not read that as yet. Saw with my own eyes in September, 2015, at München Hauptbahnhof, hundreds of new 'arrivals' being fed Semmeln, etc., by well-meaning people many of whom were very young. These migrants were mostly able-bodied men who should have stayed at home fighting for what they believe in? Nobody can tell me that there were no 'dubious' ones amongst them? The small town of Rosenheim, south of here, suffered the same fate weeks later with the migrants unloading themselves from the train from Salzburg onto the platform. It was all a terrible mess, which really started a new rift between the CDU and partner-party CSU, which still has not healed IMHO?

Now looking for that Tagesshau article! Thank you.
