I remember that one. I was excited cos the goals were to be shown on tv the next day, a real rarity for us then, on Saint and Greavsie.
Aye made a change from the Stockport, Tranmere and Southend goals that were usually on from the Friday. As a kid in the 80s, I saw S&G as ancient beings. Suppose age wise, they were similar to pundits like Shearer or Keown nowadays. Saturday was the beginning of Grandstand then a juggle between FF and S&G. Some great theme tunes back then too.
Sure I've made mention of this before, bit I will raise you puffs my BWFC away in 1976 Lost 5-1 stood on Embankment in pissing Lancashire rain, second half collapse by HAL, usual scenario of home crowd, snug in the covered side stands, going wild with delight every time one went in which it seemed to do with monotonous regularity. Still at least the locals were friendly afterwards.
Doncaster Rovers. League Cup Rd 4 74/75. Lost 2-1. Massive away following, hugely disappointing display against a lower league side. Alf Wood scored one and missed twenty one. DRFC got thumped 7-1 at Spurs in the next round. I have never seen a decent City performance at Belle Vue or the Keepmoat.
Speaking of detesting the Blunts, can anyone remember the championship game were we were battling relegation and Colin was in charge of United? They were 2 up coasting and late on in a heartbeat we got it to 2 2. Duffy got one of the goals I remember. Then at 2 2 the most remarkable turn around looked complete when Stuart Green rounded Kenny to score a certain late winner when the cheating c""t literally rugby tackled Green down to the floor. Not only did Kenny not get sent off remarkably no penalty was given!!! Kenny gestured at the City fans behind his goal too! To top it all off Unsworth got an injury time winner for the Blunts!!! I despise Kenny to this day!!! Bad memories!!!
Forgot about Lincoln. Then lost at home 0-2 to them in the home leg. Ah the great days in the lower divisions...
Can't have been a worse away day than THAT game at Turf Moor surely? I've been to plenty of other ones which were **** for a variety of reasons (including getting chucked out of Sunderland & beaten up at Rochdale of all places), but I'm constantly amazed by people's detailed memory of the actual game. They all blend into one for me and I can't remember any match details at all of most games We did beat Bournemouth on Saturday didn't we?!
You're right. It's remarkable that so many people remember who refereed a game that happened 7 years ago when it wasn't a big name ref or anything. My most vivid recollection is of the disallowed free kick. The celebrations went on for ages and ages because no one had even considered that a direct free kick into the top corner could be ruled out. We were at the back of the stand going mental and the celebrations were just coming to a natural end when we started to gradually realise that the game had restarted and the goal had been disallowed. The Burnley fans must surely have had a right laugh at us celebrating a disallowed goal for so long, but I had no idea at the time.
Have not been to any away game where we conceded lots. Can only remember one 3-0 against Bury back in 1961 a couple of matches before the season ended. Bury's win ensured they finished top of the league in a canter with club records for goals scored and matches won. They still stand today. Incidentally our record for both exceeds theirs by 1. 109 goals and 31 wins in season '65-66'.
There were some strange results in our '65-'66 record breaking year. The one that stands out for me was the tonking we were given at home against York (1-4). York ended up bottom (by miles), yet they anihilated us that day. To me it was an away game - I was living in Leeds and had to hitch-hike to home games. We lost at home to QPR the previous game at B.P. (1-3), but ended up with a 19-2-2 home record that season.
FA Cup game at Cov 0-3, following winning there 1-0 in previous season.. Very poor on the day, against a decent Cov side.. 2-3 v Port Vale....Elliott scored with less than a minute to go to make it 2-2, then straight from the kick off they got a winner. when City stopped for an offside.....Recall the ref stank to high heaven that day
I was in Tokyo at the time of the Barnsley game, thinking that City had won and confirmed promotion, only to discover at about 3 in the morning in a Shinjuku bar that we'd lost...0-2 Mine hosts couldn't understand why I was crying into my beer.
Don't think so Duffens. They started off poorly, remained so, except for them beating us at home sometime in September. That's why it was a shock home defeat for us which stuck in my mind.
