4-0 down after 28 mins that day

Houghton out was the outcome of that particular day

Did you go? I didn't but I was in a pub that night when Dave Dewberry and a player or member of the training staff were removing jackets and offering to step out on to the car park after some players appeared in the pub before the supporters he was going to meet had arrived back. Supporters suggesting if they had any decency they wouldn't show their faces, how could they look as though they hadn't a care in the world...
Looking at the players we had then a 7-2 defeat was unbeieveable.

Yes I was there.
Met some mates who'd slept overnight at Kings X on seats in the station, these were the days when the notorious Roger Gleaves and his ilk lurked around there offering to 'help' provincial runaways and the ilk.
4-0 down on 28 mins, game over long before half time.
G. Roberts, K. Edwards playing but also Eddie Blackburn, Dave Hawker

Mansfield away 0 - 2, Hateley's first game in charge for me. THere was a massive amount of anticipation and optimism after the fish Dolan era. I remember telling a Mansfield fan before the game that we would win in double figures. What a tw*t I felt after about 20 mins when it became patently clear that Hateley didn't have a clue what he was doing.

A life lesson was that, never again will I show blind optimism.

Yes, great anticipation after an unbeaten preseason. Smashing day, nice weather, good dinner time session in the pub near the ground. Then the game...
Won't the embarrass the poster on here by naming him, who after watching Hateley, who was sporting a fine suntan, doing a stretching routine and warm up of a type we hadn't seen before turned to me and said "You can tell he is class just by the way he warms up".

Worst away game for me was Portsmouth away. Dowie's first game in charge. 2-1 with injury time to play against one of the worst teams in the league and we lost 3-2. Typical City and it was then i knew we were doomed and relegation certainties.

Doncaster in 1998 I think , bottom of the football league , chucked it down all game and we lost 1-0 ..Players walked off to chants of you're not fit to wear the shirt . Don't see how any premier league game is classed as worse then that
Cant remember if it were 97 or 96 when we lost 3 0 away to Brighton who were bottom of the entirw league at the time, something of a trend in the mid to late 90s

Even worse was the only other occasion we have let in 7 goals in my time as a City fan, the 7-2 defeat at Brentford.
I was at that game . December 1979 think it was Ken Houghton's last match as our manager .Was in London for the weekend visiting my dad's sister . Dad took me to the game , I was only 15 , by 5 pm I wish I had gone shopping with the other female members of the family. I was also at the Huddersfield 5 nil defeat Christmas time 1980 . Oh happy days !

At least there was no one telling you to sit down and shut up.<laugh>

Lost 5-0 at Barsley in the November game.
Mike Smith out

Also remember a good battering at Millwall in the mid 80 ' s , again over Christmas . Cannot remember the score , think it was 5 nil . However , a few days later was at Barnsley to see us win with ease .

Ditto Citygirl.
Remember being in Waterfront that night when some City players were in after Millwall. Tony Norman, Jobbo etc

Have mentioned this before, but the Monday after that defeat, following a midweek 4-0 defeat at the mighty Newport County, I got a lot of mucky looks for bursting out laughing (libraries were quiet places in those more refined days). The reason for my mirth? Spotting a book titled"Successful Defending The Mike Smith way".

Did you confront them and vent your anger re. embarrassing defeat .

No way

We weren't poodles back then, we'd just had 2 promotions and previous games had beaten Leeds then GY.
Good times and Waterfront was a great night back then.
Remember outside after and it was snowing and we threw a snowball at Tony Norman "Catch Tony!" and he took it in the spirit in which it was intended.

Had to check who GY are , think Grimsby , who we defeated on boxing day . Remember leaving Hull on the OSC coach for the Millwall game with snow on the ground, no snow in London only misery , and returning to more snow in Hull . Thinking back , we had 3 good victories and one horrendous display over the festive period , 9 points from 12 this Christmas/ new year I would take now .

Rick put together this list of ten disasterous aways, I was at eight of them and there were some real dogs in there (it's already been pointed out that the 5-1 Colchester game should be on there)...

I was at one of those, and yet strangely rank it as one of my favourite games, purely because it was my first. 4-0 loss to Milwall. :)

Has no one mentioned Burnley yet?

Worst away games at Burnley could have its own thread.

My worst away day when I'm not a violent man but I could have smacked one of their fans was Donny away in League 1 when we'd just been promoted as had Donny. They paraded the league 2 trophy just in front of the away fans as we'd finished runners up to them the season before. They won 1 nil but Ellison missed a sitter late on which would have shut them up!!! Ashbee absolutely nailed one of their players on the touch line and didn't even wait for the inevitable straight red as he trudged down the tunnel! All in all a day to forget!
