Nathan Redmond Verdict?

They had patches of not scoring, but they've been known to score for us so it's not really the same.

As for Long, he isn't a very good striker if we're talking about putting the ball behind the net, but he's there for his other skills. You might argue the same for Redmond, but I think Long's contribution on the pitch is more tangible than Nathan's. But then, that's just me.

I had somewhat pegged Redmond as one of those kind of useless guys that can put on a bit of show with the ball once in awhile, but mostly just cuts inside and then blazes over the bar or miles wide. Not that he couldn't improve, but that's what I felt he was like now.

He's actually impressed me with his willingness to defend, and his ability to hold possession on the dribble to bring other people in (although he still tends to dribble into walls). He passes and crosses okay. Not great, because he doesn't always have his head up.. but better than I thought. He at least has a bit of touch and it's at least in his head to try and look for runs.

Mostly, I think he makes defenses have to mark him. I figured they would just let him do his thing knowing it ends in a goal kick.

You could say the same about Long-- that he too does most things well except score. I wouldn't argue if you think Long has the edge. But I think it's at least debatable. Which is impressive to me, because I would have said that Redmond as striker would be useless if not putting the ball into the net.

I think that what Redmond has done is given himself a decent floor, which justifies playing him. He's maybe not the best but he does enough that at a minimum he can be played quite a bit as a striker or AMC. Which gives him the opportunity to learn how to finish and add to his game. As opposed to Long, who probably won't get any better. As a still-developing player, just getting your foot in the door is important. Look at poor Danny Ings. That guy never gets to play at all and his career is likely going to stall big-time because of it.
 
I love Tadic, but Redmond is different and more like Lallana, which is the type of player I think we've been missing since he left. IMO

No, I agree. I often find myself shouting "take him on", or "run at him" at our wide players. Tadic, Bertrand and Cedric do this occasionally, but Redmond looks the guy most likely to run into the box with the ball at his feet and defenders in his wake.

I'm happy seeing him do that through the middle though.

He will not score as many goals in a season as Mane but he is already proving to be a more consistant performer. He offers us something different and you always need his type of player in your squad, I personally feel that he will go on to play for England in a few years and he'll replace Lallana at Liverhampton!....that last bit was a joke..:grin:

Not sure what the difference means if it ends up with a cross into the box for a striker.

Is this for me? Not sure really. Maybe I have missed your point, but certainly not deliberately. I was just pointing out that I don't think we miss Lallana because I would say Tadic is of that creative type, probably more creative.

Edit: As someone pointed out, we had Mane too since Lallana.
 
Redmond with a great delivery from the right for the u21's to assist the first goal. Demarai Gray scored it but both Nathon and Prowsey played a big part.

Not a big difference, just a different style, it all helps unlock defences in different ways.

It was aimed at you and LTL, but in truth, I did forget about Mane. It's hard to keep up as a Saints fan at times.

That's actually not a bad shout. Redmond does remind me a bit of lallana - a lot of work rate and great touch.
He still has plenty of time to improve, lallana wasn't playing in the PL until a few years after Redmond.

Ok, my final bump and am going back to a post from a year ago.

The post wasn't started by a saints fan but I wonder, a year on do we know anymore about a verdict on Redmond. He was young\promising etc..... he still is.

I liked one of the posts that said we could do with Redmond being a 10 goal, 6 assists a season type player.

Could we get that this season, do we know more about Redmond and what he is capable of than we did then?

Good or poor signing?
