You could have written this in 2010, 2012 or 2014

Yes. What that is I don't know now. I'm totally flummoxed by the England football regime's inability to perform to anything reaching the sum of its parts, so much have they impressed upon me their dreadful performance. And I mean on and off the pitch there. It's probably an all-time low and I don't see it improving any time soon. There has been a poisonous core of apathy and unprofessionalism running through the England setup going as far back as I can remember. I believe that Brian Clough, for example, would have shot that to smithereens, or been shown the door, very quickly, had he been appointed England manager. Most certainly, even England's nice men, for example Trevor Brooking, found it incredibly hard to get the England juggernaut moving in any direction. Short-termism [the British disease] and an inability to see confidently, clearly and logically through situations, has plagued the England FA.

Big Sam is only one who I can think that wouldn't get caught up in the FA and media's puppet strings.

England don't need a good manager to some extent ,they just need someone who can stand there at the first press conference and say " **** you, you,you and you!, I'm doing it my way"

I've read none of this thread so please forgive any duplication but as an Englishman living in Scotland, I've had my fair share of conversations about this subject over the last month and thought I'd share my views here.

I warmed to Hodgson very quickly. This was primarily down to him being good to his word. He said he would pick on form and he did - Clyne, Lambert, Rodriguez, Lallana and Bertrand were all called up on the strength of their performances in our shirt. The same is true of the Tottenham players. He also said that he would be loyal to players who performed well for him in an England shirt, regardless of how they were doing at their clubs (within reason) - Smalling, Cahill, Townsend, Lallana (again), Hart, Sturridge and Henderson could all be said to have benefited from that approach. On the back of this philosophy, he managed to field an effective and sometimes exciting team that produced some tremendous results. The Euro qualifying campaign was in fact perfect.

Hodgson then wobbled. He failed to remain true to the methods that had delivered those results and and a perfect qualifying campaign. Shoehorning Rooney into midfield and gambling on Wilshere's fitness were, in my opinion, crazy decisions which ultimately cost us. The question here is why did he do it? He didn't appear to be someone who would bow to external pressure, whether it be the usual media nonsense or from the FA. In fact, was there even any media pressure? I wasn't aware of any in the build up to the tournament which makes his decisions even more peculiar and goes some way to explaining the alleged unrest in the camp - he had backtracked on everything that had got the team to where they were. Despite this, I thought that we were terribly unfortunate against both Russia (in particular) and Slovakia so there could easily have been a different outcome. Instead, we're left with a post-mortem which I believe would be entirely unnecessary had he simply stuck to his principles. Why he didn't, I guess we'll never know but what we do need now is someone strong enough to do it their way without any interference. For my money there's only one candidate - Big Sam.

I actually have a lot of time for Steve Bruce. He's not necessarily the first person who would pop in to my head for that job, but I like him none the less. He always comes across as honest and to be fair has been fairly successful at Wigan and Hull (I can't remember about Birmingham).

My apathy and despair towards the FA, would mean I'd be ok if Brucey got the job. I'm more interested to hear what they are going to do in terms of long term structure, culture and style thought football in grass roots England. That is where more continued effort is needed.

Agreed. He comes across as a good and genuine bloke and he's a decent manager.

Bruce is a good maneger but I think he's a bit too nice. At least with Allardyce you feel there would be no nonsense.
Tbh, I'm slightly shocked at my own preference for Sam Allardyce, but I believe we have reached that point where he's required to stop the rot. Ideally, I'd like Slavan Bilic, for several reasons, not necessarily directly to do with the good of the England team. ;)

It's not about the next manager. It's about what they plan to do with football in this country. That's what matters next.
