I'm trying to make sense of the fact why DD wasn't selected, and, even allowing for a certain natural bias, I just can't come up with any logical footballing reason.
I totally disagree with the decision to pick Rashford. At the moment he is just a half season wonder. His inclusion probably reflects the lack of quality English strikers, but didn't affect the decision as to whether or not to take DD. As a defensive midfielder he was surely in contention with Dier, Henderson, Milner and Wilshere. Personally I haven't seen enough of Dier to comment on how the two compare, but the decision to take Wilshere after playing only a few minutes football last season beggars belief. And when it comes to comparing DD with the other two, then it becomes even harder to accept that he was left out.
DD and Kante ran the midfield for us all last season, breaking up opposition attacks and getting the ball moving forward at pace. There was nobody did it better than those two, and as a result we beat 'bigger' and 'better' teams. I would rate DD as one of the most complete players with and without the ball that Leicester have ever had. His work rate is phenomenal, he reads the game so well and has great vision. In footballing terms on current form he leaves Milner, Henderson and Wilshere way behind. The only reason I can come up with taking Milner and Henderson is out of loyalty. Woy doesn't want to get rid of those players who played in most of the matches who got us to the finals, even though some of the performances were turgid and uninspiring (and that's being kind!) against opposition that should have been dispatched with ease.
Loyalty is an admirable quality but, when it comes to trying to win football tournaments, I'm not sure it makes sense to include your 'favourites' at the expense of better players.
