Err... excuse me but I wasn't confident at all. I may be fairly positive amongst a crowd of wrist slitters, but the only prediction I've actually got totally wrong was that I expected Cortese to stay, or buy out Saints. And several got that one wrong as well.

Well unless I have an incredibly bad memory I seem to recall that you were saying when the rumours of Shaw/Chambers/Lallana/Lovren/Lambert leaving were coming out that it was media trying to derail the good work we had done, they wouldn't want to leave, Cortese would just flat out refuse to sell.

I don't really want to get into a big conversation about this, I was just pointing out to Latviandream that your usual stance when dealing with rumours is to not believe them and look at things positively.

I think a lot of us at the time didn't believe they'd all leave. Lallana because he had sworn undying devotion, Lovren because he'd only just got here, and Shaw and Chambers were just breaking through. We knew that Cortese seemed to be willing to let Lambert go...which few could understand. What we didn't know was that Cortese was at risk himself (I'd love to know what that was all about....the night of the long knives)....what goes around, comes around I'd guess. He needed friends and didn't have any.

Without going into he said, she said....sometimes things get confused in a long conversation. I have been credited with things I didn't say before....if I like it, I don't point it out. <laugh>

Yep. If a big bid comes in he is gone. It's as simple as that.
Agree Beefy and I don't think anyone on the forum would criticise the club for that as long as the funds are reinvested quickly in the transfer market.
If the reports about Mane are true then I believe we should hold on to get the best deal which I wouldn't consider opening the email for less than £30m+ especially if the media can be believed (I know!) there will be half a dozen clubs throwing cash at us to take him. Lets look at this a s a positive with Big Vic (£15m), Pelle (£10m) and Mane (£30m+) + the fresh transfer funds agreed with the board we should be in for a very exciting summer I would suggest

In fairness I really cannot see Sadio going this year next maybe but not this year. Unless someone really comes in with a truly silly offer to tempt saints but even then it would be doubtful. Money aside, I cannot see how any club above Saints in the league could enhance his career Champions league or no.
Next season who knows....lets deal with that as it comes...........

Wanyama will go if a decent offer comes in (nearly 100% certain). Mane we should try and keep even if we have to insist (40% chance we'll keep him). Think we should try and extend Pelle's stay....not easy to get a striker like him, contrary to opinion (50:50 would be my guess).

We were nowhere near as good when Cortese was in charge, and most of our players were relative unknowns. Easy to say no to teams when no one was really interested. Makes a difference when you have 3 consecutive top 8 finishes and beat the big teams, they take notice.

In reality, do player swap deals ever actually happen?

I still haven't forgiven Saints for that crap money and player exchange whereby we got Frank Saul and the North London Yobos got Martin Chivers. We always seem to lose out. I challenge anyone to name a player exchange where we did well. it also smacks of arrogance Ibe isn't good enough for Liverpool but he is good enough for us and Mane is far too good for us. We have to break this attitude if we are to be taken seriously as regular challengers for European Football. We must o longer be seen as little old Southampton.

If Pelle has a year left, I would happily keep him one more year and let him go for free next summer. I don't see the true value in extending his contract. He has served us well and will be useful (but not first choice) this coming season in my opinion, but will still contribute some goals. The year after he will definitely be on the decline, so let him have a free move of his choice with a nice payday, a hand shake and a big "Thank you Graziano".

If he is here when he is 32, 33 we will fall out of love with him (those that love him) :)
