Off Topic The Goodhand Arms

Many languages have the Latin/Mediteranean words to derive from, and many languages have the Germanic words to derive from, but English has Latin, Germanic, Indian, Portuguese, Chinese and many other tongues to enrich the language. Plus you have authors such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Hardy, etc.. who just invented entirely new words or from conjugations of separate others. Then you have authors like Will Self who takes old or little used words and puts them into a modern context and scenario, and fair play to that. English is an extremely mobile and living language. Far more so than most others, perhaps any other.

You missed out Dylan Thomas.

No spoilers please!! I'm re-watching season 5 before I start season 6 so I have some sort of idea of what's going on.

It is the final scene I like where they get chased by giant man eating ants and are rescued in the nick of time by slugs whose sticky, slippery slime stops the ants only for our heroes to be sucked up and........ no I don't want to spoil the ending for you.

I did. But wasn't that Welsh? Perhaps an understandable omission then.

I also left out, Stevenson, Trollope, Austen, Elliot [both TS and George], Wordsworth, Coleridge, the Brontes, and too many others to name. And John Betjeman. And Douglas Adams, for Pete's sake.

....and all the Americans. Not to mention the Irish, the Australians, the West Indians. Shakespeare's mother tongue gets around a bit.

So the Hillsborough verdict due today. Difficult for the jury...have to look at evidence of wrong doing at the time and not at the subsequent cover up. Also must ignore pressure to absolve all Liverpool fans because it was Liverpool fans who died. But could more have been saved. A very emotional case. Looks in my eyes like a perfect storm....fans not being able to get in the ground, no decision to delay kick off in order that they can get in, not enough policing/stewarding, inexperience, bad decision making.....you could go on and on, but with no evidence of malice, is any one person responsible. On the other hand, the man at the top has to take responsibility and should have fallen on his sword at the time. The cover up delayed a full investigation....all that continued suffering when this could have been over decades ago and the bereaved could have grieved without the pressure of getting angrier and angrier. However, the jury have to put that out of their mind....won't be easy.

Agreed Fran, a very difficult decision to make, particularly cold.

I agree it looks like a lot of things were the cause and no one thing or person to blame. I just hope whatever the outcome it is accepted by all and everyone can move on.

I went to get my photo done for my passport renewal at the weekend. You get 3 chances for one fee. 1st photo <yikes> 2nd photo <yikes><yikes> 3rd photo <wah><wah><wah>. Why does it always come out with you looking like you are about to kill someone? I met a lady there who had come back for a second attempt <laugh>.
