Douglas Slocombe, one of cinema's best ever cinematographers, has passed away at the age of 103. He shot about 80 films, including stuff like the original Indiana Jones films, The Italian Job, and many of the Ealing comedies such as Kind Hearts and Coronets, as well as filming a lot of Second World War material, including the Nazi invasion of Poland.
An amazing man - bright as a button and a fantastic pilot. He was a brilliant speaker and inspiration to several generations of test pilots. I heard today that he'd earned some money as youngster by riding a Wall of Death motorbike whilst carrying a lion in the sidecar.
