Why did they introduce self service check outs?

To reduce queuing primarily, convenience for the shopper.

Doesn't work if you've only got one and close all the other tills though.

I never mentioned anything along these lines whatsoever. I said, and I quote myself, "I'd be stunned if the guy who owns the company was involved with the final decision about where and how tickets are bought." and I was questioned.

So the analogy really is perfect in response to that.

Okay, they should have tickets in a ticket office, but like trains, concerts, flights etc there can't be many occasions now where people don't buy on line or at an automated booth.

You brought the totally irrelevant example of a supermarket into it. Incidentally, shouldn't Ken have altered it to Mors or something similar?

Its nothing to do with him being a control freak, the decisions with regards to ticket sales have involved; terminating staff, reducing the wage bill, installing new turnstile scanners, upgrading the ticket office software and upgrading the sales website to name a few.

I don't see how anyone can believe that the boss wouldn't have had a say in that huge expenditure, the staff turnover or the infrastructure decisions.

Do you think the people who turn up to the ticket office to be told they can't buy a ticket are so impressed they then go on the club shop and purchase something. It would be interesting to find out how many, when they are able to purchase a ticket from the ticket office then buy something in the club shop, or how many who buy tickets from the machine then purchase something in the club shop. I suspect in all cases the figure will be negligible.

Some on here seem to be under the impression the peanut earning minions decide these things on Allam's behalf with no consultation with him.

Bad example, Morrisons have scrapped self service and replaced the machines with traditional manned checkouts.

Their customers didn't like them, so they acted to give their customers what they wanted.

    Weird concept I know.

Exactly, if you fly with a low cost airline, you have to print out and take your own boarding pass, or they'll stiff you for a load of cash to do it for you.

It's the way things are nowadays. Digital age init...

My local Morrisons has just replace the 4 self service tills and removed them and the first traditional checkout to make the area big enough for a dozen self service terminals. Which are different to the previous ones and seem to cause less problems than the original ones.

Just looked and it seems that though they did announce they were getting rid of all of them in April, they only actually got rid of 1,000 of them and they're replacing the other 2,000 with 'more friendly' ones.

They used to have self service tills in the Tesco Express near my flat, every time I bought a bottle of wine (which was every time I went in), I had to wait for someone to come and authorise it. I only used it a couple of times before switching back to standing in the queue to pay normally, as it was always quicker.

There's a difference between the owner and the person who runs the business. A massive difference.

I was under the impression that they'd discuss it with the person running the company, not the owner.

I've just been in Morrisons and used one of a number of self service check outs.

The problem with trains, concerts, and flights is that they often sell out weeks and months in advance so the vendors are happy to take the easiest and cheapest option for them. Whereas at City there are around 5000 - 8000 empty seats for each game, the club is aware of it and so are potential customers, yet they refuse to sell a ticket to a customer stood in front of the ticket counter just a few days before the event.

is the ticket machine card only or can you put cash in it.
if it's card only then you should be able to get a ticket with cash at the ticket office.

    It is card only.
Yes they should also stop that direct debit **** as well. Go and queue at YEB in town to pay the leccy bill. Then onto NEGAS to pay the gas. Progress can **** off.
