The people who decide whether or not to sign the player will very rarely if ever watch the player. That's not to say they don't have people watch them to compile said stats.

In which case would it not be worth offering the players we have additional wages in renewed contracts rather than trying to buy other players in?

Underwhelming in what way? Because he cost only £1.7M as opposed to £9M? Because his name isn't Messi?

This lad has scored 17 goals in 21 games, last season Andre Gray scored 16 league goals in a 46 game season, they look to have very similar attributes so my money would be on this lad doing the business, and I'm excited at the thought of watching it unfold. It'll be interesting to see which player performs the best over the course of this season. I think your post should be saved as someone's signature and you should be made to eat it come the end of the season.

You amaze me Lewis, you must be the most negative ****er that I've ever encountered.

Not sure why everyone is harping on about 17 in 21.. if he'd scored 17 in 21 in the Conference no one would think it meant anything. He hasn't played in England before, the only season he had outside Norway he flopped, and Bruce has a history of these signings flopping.

Maybe maybe not, but it's a scouts job to do that anyway that's what they're paid for. Your post read as if they don't actually watch players and just make signings based purely on stats, that's all.

I read a rather detailed article about Matthew Bennon (if that's his name), the way he runs his clubs and the processes involved in signing players. He claimed they won't entertain the notion of signing anyone until their scouts have seen them play in all conditions, and that they look at stats such as chances created and view the quality of them, attacking runs etc and ignore goal and assist records.

Whether that's just bluster or actually put into practice only they know, don't see why he'd make that up though. But if imagine there will hve been times they've had to act fast without the time to compile these comprehensive portfolios.

They generally don't. Read up on the experiment, it's actually quite an interesting way to conduct transfer business.

He could be a success, I'm just pointing out that scoring a bunch of goals in an inferior league is anything to be giddy about. I'd rather be cautious and treat whatever comes as a positive.

My guess is he'll score on debut like most of our players seem to, score a couple more over the next month, and then drop off. Like they all do.

They watch every player meticulously before making a move to buy them. I hit post by accident and cut it off early.

You're confusing the people who compile the stats, who offer zero actual opinion on the players they're watching, with the people who assess which players they want to buy.

    2008–2009 Peñarol 8 (3)
    2009–2014 Palermo 111 (31)

Thats the records of the strikers Bruce has signed from abroad. Heres Diomande.

    2015 Stabæk 21 (17)

If you think Bruce hasn't scouted the player your deluded. Recently reading the book 'The Nowhere Men' will tell you how much scouting goes all over the world. The problem being if they do well for Hull City is another question, and not an exact science as we have found out.

Yep, was very heartening to hear Bruce say we've been looking at him for 6 months or so. Got the distinct impression with both Prozzie and Hernandez - not so sure with Sagbo - that we hadn't scouted them at all.

Sorry for being realistic. If you recall we were all pretty giddy after signing superstar and Hull City legend Ben Arfa last season on Deadline Day.

What the **** are you rambling on about? They have scouts who do as scouts do. Go and watch players, and build up an informed opinion on the player to bring back to the manager. They don't just sit there with tally charts jotting down how many passes, shot and tackles a player makes.

That was an attitude problem, not an ability problem so I think it is very different.

    Yeah.. they do.

Read the Guardian article on Midtjylland. They specifically instruct their scouts not to form opinions on the players so that they can base the signings purely on statistics and mathematics. It's the Moneyball system applied to football.

For sure, don't think people applying reason and tempering expectation should be abused though.

Don't know if Stan Ternant is still at Hull as chief scout, I cannot see him looking at a load of statistics etc etc. We aren't Midthylland.
