I must admit fez I don't find it exciting as Bruce's record of finding a goal scorer is dog ****e. I'd much rather he gave himself half a chance and signed a proven striker.
Come October we could and more than likely will be starting a jan transfer thred with a striker again top of the list. Hopefully Hernandez will keep scoring as I'm not sure there will be a decent choice of strikers available like there has been this time......hopefully I'm wrong

Well, we are in agreement on that subject Peter. Possession football drives me up the wall and what the hell has happened to Elmo? I've seen this guy take on his marker, beat him all ends up and put the near perfect cross in but now he just passes the ball back aimlessly. All the passion has gone from his game.
As you say, stats are absolute and utter crap for mine I just want to see the footballs in the back of the net (theirs).

Disagree completely. I offered up a couple of stats that offer more than just 'Goals and Assists', yes some will have flaws, which is why they would be weighted differently in scouts' considerations. The clubs that use these stats use them very well, just have to look at how the Danish club (I'm not even going to bother attempting to spell it) is performing, picking up relative nobodies and winning the league.

Yes, pass completion is relatively pointless with players just tapping the ball back and forward, but passes into the forward third, involvements in attacking plays, etc. all strip away those pointless passes and highlight how much the player contributes to attacking plays even if they don't end up with the assist or goal.

You said that statistics aren't as useful as personal judgement, my point is that personal judgement distorts the impact a player has in a game.

    I'll give you two examples:

Player A is pacey, has good feet, gets into the box a lot, and scores a lot of goals. Additionally, for the past five years has played for the same club.
Player B is big and slow, has a poor first touch, and hasn't scored a goal for his club for the last 12 months. Has moved between clubs a bit in the last five years.

    You'd pick player A, right?

In that case, you'd be signing Hernandez instead of Jelavic.

If you look into the stats, it might reveal that Hernandez's goals are primarily penalties, that his goals have come in the second Division in Italy, and that his movement off the ball, and touches are quite poor statistically speaking.

If you look at Jelavic's stats, you might notice that his goals-to-shots ratio is incredibly high, suggesting he's pretty clinical. You might discover that in the last 12 months he has been shunted to the side by a new system and hasn't been able to play in his preferred role.

While there's still an element of personal judgement - I'm incredibly exhausted so can't think of better examples off the top of my head right now - I guess my point is that using the right stats in the right way can actually be a better way to analyse a player than personal judgement - until of course your personal judgement begins to see players in the ways that stats suggest you should look at them.

Everyone thought that when we signed Gedo but it turned out to be a masterstroke.

Just a small point re the suggestion that we've still got some long term loan spots available, you can only do long term loans in the transfer window, in the emergency loan window there's a three month limit.

I didn't realise that. Has that always been the case or is it a recent rule change?

Emergency loans can be anywhere between 28 and 93 days, they can't be recalled within the first 28 days but can after that and it's not a new rule, it's always been the case(as far as I can remember).

    I said statistics are useful.
I went on to say that I would judge what is useful. A five yard pass wouldn't be included in my statistics (unless it was achieving something). I wouldn't judge a floated 50 year pass from one full back to another as useful. A pass not completed but but very dangerous but missed by the receiver would be classed as useful.
I agree that statistics are useful but only relevant statistics and they are not the be all and end all.
You have to understand a players abilities even if they are not utilised in his present team.

Oh yeah I knew that. I thought for some reason though that teams outside the prem where allowed season long loans after the deadline for transfers. Not quite sure why I thought that though. I must have been getting it confused with the higher amount of loans you can take from a perm team if you're not in the prem. I've probably got that confused as well

Gedo started well but soon faded, I'm not sure I'd class him as a masterstroke. He wouldn't have cut it in the pl

Midtjylland and Brentford do lots of scouting. They don't just look at stats and find a player, they go and watch them play lots of times.

Probably where they get these stats from anyway (they record them themselves) as these obscure leagues they seem to be getting players from don't have the wealth of stats the premier league does. Even in the championship they don't record all this stuff.

We'll find out in the January window how much the Allams want to get promoted, and so how much they really want out of here now.

Why would they spend if we are up at the top, they would probably think why do we need anyone else when these players are doing the job.

One could reach far-flung areas of the galaxy in less time. (No offence intended).

Well if we are in the top two at that time and running away with promotion I suppose it's unlikely that much change would be made. But more likely it will be a lot closer and all other rivals will be strengthening while at the same time we could easily lose players like Diame if they are doing well and there could be injuries by then also. This transfer window we haven't even seen serious action taken over getting a goalkeeper when it's cost us several points already.

There's many a time a fit bird has been pulled only to subsequently find out they're not that fit afterall & you'd have been better off with a kebab & a ****.
