I've read that Thauvin actually prefers the number 10 role, so if that's true then Christ knows what's going on

Thauvin can be a ****ing baller on his day mind.

The speed that he generates with the ball over the first 5 yards is explosive, he just constantly gets away from his man.

This deal looks good to me, some reliable journo's in France talking about it as well.

Its all a waste of time and money obvs we wont have any cover in any defensive position and goal scorers or anyone whi can run a game from dm.

I don't mind Thauvin coming in but I'm concerned at the lack of urgency with the ****ing defence! We need two urgently.

I see people on twitter keep posting that video of that flick he did in training. Fantastic. I'm sure even Shola could probably do that. It means **** all because no one would ever do it in a proper match.

It's truly desperate at the back. The worry would also be Mbemba being sucked into the vortex of crappiness if we don't sign a good partner for him who is good in the air. That left hand side is also killing us.

He's going to flop just like cabella i suspect its a totally different league.

Im pleased if he joins but in reality we are still not better off.

We would still require another 4 after Thauvin to aim for top half let alone top 8 which our club is apparently aiming for.

Cabella was too lightweight, Thauvin's a bit more bit like that Montero at Swansea. We'll see. However, I agree with BRS that it's scandalous for the club to spend so much money - it'll be around $20m considering the loss we'll take on Cabella - on a winger with Captain Colo and Haidara leaking goals.

I'm all for Thauvin coming in ..

BUT...We desperately need to sort out the defence. .Mbemba looks like he could be a terrific signing (iam already a bit smitten with him )..but we cannot expect him and jackass Janmaat to do the job of 4 players. Mbemba will lose all confidence and end up...'tooned'.

If there is anyone at the club that truly believes that our defence is 'fine' they want sacking. It was obvious against Southampton, obvious against Swansea and pretty ****ing obvious in pre-season against mediocre opposition that our defence was an utter pile of ****.

Coloccini - Whoever took the decision to give him a new contract wants shooting. McClaren's decision to keep him as captain is quite frankly baffling. The guy is a past it liability who's head drops faster than a French soldiers in battle. The guy has no ****ing spine. His legs have gone, his positioning is awful and is ability to out jump opposition players is bollocks.

Haidara - I was willing to give him time, but **** that. He is an absolutely shocking footballer. His defending is woeful and his control is laughable. If we are planning to have him as a our permanent left back then we are ****ed. A massive liability especially with Obertan in front of him.

Steven Taylor - He was never that good, but is probably the best of a bad bunch which is frightening. He is nothing more than a back up squad player to cover injuries. Another liability.

Williamson - I don't need to say anything. He gives his all, but he's ****. He isn't even a good enough back up.

Lascelles - Unknown quantity. Has potential from what I have seen from him. But should be used sparingly at the moment. A run in a poor side could knack his confidence.

Mbemba - An absolute beast. This guy deserves to have quality around him.

Janmaat - Best defender last season but has had a shaky start. He also needs quality around him. His sending off for me was borne out of frustration at the crap next to him and in front [Obertan and Sissoko.]

Satka - Not good enough. He's only young but he has been awful every time I have seen him play. Not PL class.

Dummett - Shocking at full back and actually decent at CB. Still though, he's prone to massive errors and doesn't convince me as a starter. A squad player.

If i've missed anyone off that list then that is probably because they are so bad they make the above collection of dogshit world class.

There's something weird happens at Newcastle - the manager always seems to take what happens in training as a clear reflection of what happens in a live football match. I mean, Obertan has more lives than a fckin cat and constantly gets praised for his training. Colo seems to be of a similar vein. We get managers looking baffled that the garbage, as has been proven over dozens of professional football matches, can look good in training but not in a match. Einstein said it best about insanity, yet that's what we do. Sometimes players can just step up when it's match day. It's a bit like being at school and enjoying being the best in the second eleven, but just not fancying it when asked to play for the firsts.

It is a massive concern that there is some kind of witchcraft going on at Newcastle. Every manager seems to fall into the same trap, ah the defence is ok, we'll add one. Someone said to me at the weekend - "Newcastle just need to start from ****ing scratch. Four new defenders" Personally I think you can find a way with Janmaat and Mbemba would obviously count as one of the 4. That leaves 2. Just buy a ****ing left back and centre back, be done with it. Its like nobody can see the obvious. Yes you've given Colo a contract and armband, so ****ing what. If he isn't good enough, he isn't good enough.

Anyone with half a ****ing footballing brain can see that our defence is ****. Coloccini needs to break his leg this week or something to get someone to act. He is NOT a ****ing captain. He's a gutless piece of **** who is well past his best.

It's crazy. Just suck it up and buy Joel Matip & Jetro Willem, job done.

    Foreign - check.
    Zero EPL experience - check.
Young enough to have sell on value - check.
Better than what we have by a country fcking mile - check.

Even if the squad is full just get rid of Haidara and Williamson.

Depends on the system - again, our managers all get dragged into the trap set by Charnley/Carr/Ashley/Llambias (delete as appropriate) of being told "here's the squad, it's top 10, make it work".

Colback and Anita can't play together. They're the same player. They aren't real destroyers and neither has instinct to drive forward - they both offer the defence an outlet and an easy pass, but then what? To play this 4-2-3-1, you need one who's really going to break up play, and the other who's available. Playing at their best, Tiote/Colback are a good top-10 partnership, but Anita/Colback won't work. So for me you're wasting an attacking outlet and not adding to the defence either. You might as well got to 3 in the middle, drop Anita, put Colback as DM (at least he can tackle) and support him with Wijnaldum and Sissoko at the same time.

Again, I think Anita's useful as a squad player and unlikely to either complain or get a better move than he's got, so we've got a backup CM and what should be an emergency (not backup) right back, which is good to have. Colback > Tiote, but my preference would be to have Colback in the squad and sell Tiote, replacing him with a talented and consistent DM. I've mentioned Fer a few times, he'd be a good shout if he can stay fit, plus he has height. Open to suggestions, though!

It's all about getting a good quality 14 or 15 players who can prioritise a way of playing (I'd go 4-3-3) but with enough options to be adaptable. It may take time, but the early signs with Schteve aren't great - no height in defence, no commanding CB, Anita/Colback together, Sissoko on the wing, no Aarons, another chance for Obertan, Haidara at left back, no backup RB - it's quite a significant catalogue of mistakes in just 2 matches (plus preseason).

See how we are in January, I'm confident Steve will rectify this stuff in due course, but he's still considerably at the whim of messrs Charnley and Carr, something I thought this "football board" was supposed to fix. And where the fck is Moncur these days!!

Danny Guthrie was better than colback and tiote is better than anita when fit.
