Indeed. But thus far we've filled one position of need with ~4m worth of players, another with a loan, and we're apparently interested in a guy on a free to fill a third. I have no doubt that we'll have a couple substantial outlays, but up to this point we're proceeding very cautiously from a financial perspective.

Wouldn't want them to break the bank for anyone----sustainability is the key. We must have a lot of money, but it isn't only for spending on players. The club doesn't run without income. Our policy is about having a balanced team....we aren't a one man team with supporting cast (as we were in Tiss's day). Turning a profit on each player is also a good source of income, though they also try and keep players...it's not all about money.

Unfortunately it is. We are in a position to sign players from much bigger clubs abroad because we are in the Premiership so have more money to offer and a better platform for that player to perform on week in, week out to then earn a move to a club slightly or much higher on the food chain who will pay them more.

Replace those two and we'll have one extra player - a right back who it seems is not rated by anyone at his former club. Plus having lost two of last season's quality back four and also one of the best CMs in the prem. Hardly a stronger position.

What I meant was although the club make money on some players, they don't move them all on just to make a profit. They try to keep the best and it is pressure from other clubs wishing to buy them rather than us trying to move them on.

We were looking to bring in 3 players this week so I was told. One was Alderweireld (obviously didn't happen) the other was Martina and haven't a clue on the other. We will buy if the right player/ players comes about.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood you point. Yeah I agree with you there, but it will be rare for a player who is wanted by a bigger club wanting to stick around. Think the only real chance we would have is if we revamped our wage structure. People look at Everton as a good model for us to be following, and they rarely lose their better players to the bigger teams (off the top of my head I can only really remember Fellaini in recent years, probably be more that I've forgotten though). But I'd wager that they pay their big players a fair bit more than we do.

Most players who are worth 20m+ will choose other destinations, even if we match the transfer fee and wages. We could to some extent just throw ridiculous piles of cash at one or two players, but you probably won't get the best performance out of them that way.

I would argue that we spend the way we do not just because it's fiscally prudent but also a wise footballing decision. Spend 3-4 years being known as the club where good, young players should go to reach their potential. Most will leave, but hopefully at a huge profit. But as our coffers grow along with our reputation, eventually some of them will start deciding to stay.

Not doubting that. Just that at the moment, even when taking into account the amount we are interested in signing, it seems that we'll only be a couple of players better off than last year, but will have lost the best players from our lineup. Just disagree that we'll be stronger next season.

Of course it will be a big challenge to fill the positions left by Morgan and Toby. But I trust the board know what they are doing.

I'm quite excited about which new players we will sign! :D

If you consider how good our last seasons signs were! Tadic, Toby, Pelle, mane, Ryan, foster and Long! Why would anyone worry :D

Beefy is right, there are so many quality player's out there and the top six can't keep them all :)

The fact Palace have signed Cabaye would suggest anything is possible

I might be going out on a limb here, but despite early promise, I was really underwhelmed by Tadic. Creative/something different..... Yes.... End product.... Very frustrating and often wasteful.

I would hope that his injury lay off has taught him to use the ball more productively for the good of the team. Some saints fans I talk to seem to think his return is on par with that bloke who could do clever stuff with bread and fish....

Vlaar is one of those fan targets that we talk about and then convince ourselves they really are a target.

What did Matt do with bread and fish? :) Always thought he was more bun and burger.

I'm hoping he will return in the form he showed when he first arrived. Ron said he had been carrying an injury and they finally had to admit defeat. Let's hope.

Saphir Taïder might be coming back to England, with Watford making a move...
