When does the season start. I have seen August 8th mentioned, just 65 days away. Must be the shortest off season we have ever had.
Ask, and I shall deliver: RvW in the Prem (2013/14) He appeared in 25 games and his 'shots per game' ratio was 1.3. Working off that, he took 32 shots (rounding down) over the whole season. Scoring 1 goal in the entire season, that makes his 'shots to goals conversion ratio' 3.13% in the Premier League. 10 of his 32 total shots were off target, 10 were on target, 12 were blocked, So his 'shots on target to goals conversion ratio' was 10% in the Premier League.
Mike Bailey's take on RvW is worth a read: http://www.pinkun.com/norwich-city/...cky_van_wolfswinkel_at_norwich_city_1_4098751 Like many of us, he wonders if AN could make all the difference for Ricky.
I know that pure stats can be misleading and you might say that his shots were harder than others, but given that Hooper's conversion rate ranges between 25% (in the Prem) and 45% (in the Champ) of shots on target* it's not great if RvW is supposed to be clinical when hitting the target. In theory, that means that Hooper would have got 2-5 goals with the chances RvW had. *those are taken from a quick google representing a point in the Champ/PL where the article was assessing it - I'm not sure what his overall percentages are for each season.
Thanks JK. Poor conversion isn't a massive surprise, but interesting to see at least two thirds of shots were on target.
He was scouted by our chief scout at the time and signed on his recommendation, he then paid for it with his job at the end of that season
OK it's hard not to but I hardly think looking at his one and only season with us and holding it up as an example is fair, there were far too many rubbish performances all round. Why aren't we talking about goals saved/not saved by defenders etc etc no we're talking about RvW's efforts when the whole teams performances were utterly pathetic. I'd give him a preseason let him compete then lob him out on loan in Europe somewhere if he's not up for it or AN doesn't want him.
Couldn't agree more Rich. New manager, New squad, New start. If he then seems not up to it, ship him out, but not before giving him a chance.
That wasn't really the point. The point was can RvW succeed. I'm saying if you benchmark it on Hooper against those stats, the answer may well be no irrespective of the manager.
Considering where we have come since January, I'm willing to leave it in the hands of Alex Neil! I don't think he'll let us down!
Granted I did not see a lot if Wolfswinkel apart from TV but I honestly do not remember him missing many real chances. No one on ones, free shots etc.
My recollections are similar, Carrabuh, and I would also say that there were times when he was unlucky to not score. Had one or two of those gone in, the story might have been different, as with the Snodgrass penalty incident.
I saw even less as MOTD is early AM for me. Can only go by posters comments on here, which are certainly very diversified. The Snodgrass penalty incident was certainly a prominent feature in our relegation season. I also gained the impression that the two of them did not get on. Maybe wrongly.
Exactly what I was saying to some other fans yesterday and of course Snoddy would never pass the ball to RvW even if he was in a good position!!!
That's a difficult one to call. It could be that, or it could be that there was a loss of confidence between the two players. Obviously that wouldn't be a problem now if AN is inclined to give him another chance.
Either way, this will be a massive test of AN's ability and it will be interesting to see the outcome. If he looks to offload for whatever reason he will then have to face the financial loss scenario for probably the first time in his career and how he handles that could be fascinating.
I don't know if you get to home games Muky, but from my seat in the N&P stand, it was obvious that that was what was happening
