This is a good point, really. Whatever Luis's faults, or his agent's, or whoever - as soon as he crossed that white line he gave everything to the team to win a game of football (occasionally too much!). Remember kevin keegan all those years ago? (Although there were rumours Case lamped him after the FA Cup Final for not trying hard enough). Thing is. especially in Europe, he's been ****ing hopeless and disinterested. Add to that he allegedly objected to playing right wingback, even when we were ****ing decimated with injuries...
Anyway, I truly won't turn on the lad - he's made his bed though, and I expect the club to ensure that a) he puts in a request, entitling him to no selling fee, and that we don't budge for under £35m (£40m if another Prem club), and b) if there are any agent's fees then he pays them. Same deal as Torres, really.
But, as has been pointed out, will he be the last to go? I fear the senior players have lost faith in Rogers. I certainly have no faith in his/the 'committee's' ability to spend the money wisely.

Why offer a player who is not the best young player in Europe £100,000 a week Rodgers and FSG.

    Coming from a completely neutral perspective i.e there are obviously some WUMs contributing who are just wanting to get a rise;

I think we need to move on from expecting any form of loyalty in modern footnball - when it does happen it is very refreshing - but it is now the exception by some distance. Why should Sterling show any loyalty to Liverpool? ... he didn't to QPR. His priorities are money and perhaps a misguided notion of 'fame'.

The modern footballer is, sadly, more often than not, driven by the bling dynamic - many young men to use a familiar phrase know the price of everything bt the value of nothing. Their value system is based on the money and possessions that the game brings them rather than the joy of playing and becoming a legend because of footballing ability rather than earnings or indeed sometimes winning trophies.

Stevie G 'regrets' not winning the Premier league - fine - that's fair enough - that's frustration and I can understand it - particularly when he came so close. But would he have deeper regrets if his footballing career had been one spent at a club with no real emotional connection but full of galacticos winning countless trophies - rather than one spent playing and captaining the team he dreamt of laying for as a kid and will no doubt love throughout the rest of his life?

I guess it comes down to how we measure 'success' - George Best won comparatively few trophies ... and played for Northern Ireland internationally - but how many kids in the playground wanted to be him? - how many grown men remember him with admiration? - contrast that with Yaya Toure - George a legend world wide, Yaya a good player certainly but a legend? ... only in his head for me - seems to measure his worth on a mixture of contract value, transfer fees and birthday cakes.

Do the number of trophies you win really define a career? - perhaps for some, not for me, Great players do not need to have a full trophy cabinet to define greatness - it's about what you do on the pitch, the entertainment and plasure you give - after all, football is supposed to be entertainment at it's base level.

Back to Raheem Sterling - good luck to him - I hope he does not become the next Scott Sinclair - but if he does he has nobody to blame than himself and his agent.

I agree that we should definitely be building the team around Coutinho but what's going to stop him from leaving in a years time after seeing other teammates leave?

And Sterling is one of the best prospects in world football - he scores goals, assists, creates chances and works hard/presses well. His stats are comparable to the bright talents in Europe and world class players like Ronaldo/Suarez at the same age. He is the best talent to come through the academy since Gerrard.

And as I say - I don't think this is about money. Do you think he wants to stay at Liverpool and win nothing, whilst playing with the likes of Lallana and Lambert?

That's right, I'm having a meltdown about Sterling following Suarez and Gerrard out of Liverpool. I'm in bits!

You better take the lad off your season progress graph!

That would all make sense.....if we hadn't already offered him "wages in line with the best youngsters in Europe" <doh>

Club: We offer Raheem £100 000 a week

Agent: Yes but we want wages in line with him being "one of the best young players in Europe"

Club: Yes....we are offering him ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS A WEEK

Agent: Oh yeah....well we still want more.....we want wages on a par with the "best players in the world"

Club: <laugh> **** off you cheeky twat

I do agree if we look at the history of this seriously.

    October: Talks begin

December Rodgers says a deal is "close"

Early January Rodgers send sterling off on a holiday

Late January rodgers says deal will be signed "very imminently."

Late January, reputedly Turns down contact wanting to negotiate commercial image rights first.

Feburary: Rodgers makes "incredible deal" claim

Mid march. Puts contract talks "on hold"

April: Sterling does interview with BBC.

"He also says he will not discuss a new contract with the Reds until the summer, no matter how big a deal he might be offered in the meantime.

"It's not about the money at all," the England forward said.

"It's never been about money. I talk about winning trophies throughout my career. That's all I talk about."

"I keep hearing I've rejected all sorts of contracts. Me, the club and my reps have spoken about it and put talks on hold until end of season, so it's frustrating to hear the contract situation keep going on and on. I just wanted to get my point across on the whole thing."

Mid april: press publish pictures of sterling acting up with pipe.

May: Gerrard: “Of course I’m biased but my advice to Raheem now is you have a manager who will believe in you and you can learn from and there is no one better than Brendan Rodgers for that. He should sign a new deal here. Brendan is a fantastic man-manager and puts a lot of time and effort into the development of an individual. The danger for these young players is they want it all too soon and they go chasing it. Then they go to another club and just become a number.”

almost immediately: "Sources close to sky" say

"Raheem Sterling is set to resume contract talks with Liverpool later this week but intends to tell them he does not plan to sign a new deal, according to Sky sources.

Sky sources understand Sterling feels aggrieved at the manner in which contract negotiations have been handled because he feels the club have tried to bully him into signing a new contract. He also does not think he has been sufficiently protected him from negative headlines.

It is understood the 20-year-old England international winger will make a decision about his future by Friday, when he is due to meet with manager Brendan Rodgers and chief executive Ian Ayre."

    ..............................................

    for me:

    1. We have too many mouth peices at our club. Rodgers has to learn at minimum not to talk like a big man all the time when things are not dealt with

    2. Its clear we left it far too late to move on certain players. I am not sure if the cub thought wisely or not about timing of stelring negotiations but it seems he was never signing from october.

    3. We've been far too lenient on this little ****. IMO we've fostered bad feeling by playing favorites with him then not disciplining him and now he thinks he can do anything

    4. gerrard has been quite a mouth since he announced he was leaving. His comments on sterling were not needed but my view is they are merely an excuse in a long term plan this agent and player have had. There was zero intent to sign way back in january and LFc should have sold then.

Why, is he going to make his transfer retroactive to the start of this season?

Rodgers didn't say "one of", he said "the". There are young players who aren't considered the best player in Europe who are on more than £100k a week. I'm not saying that's a good thing but it's a fact.

Either he's being offered more money by another club who are prepared to stand by Rodgers' statement that he's the best young player in Europe or he simply doesn't want to be at Liverpool anymore and is prepared to move for the same/less money.

The point is Rodgers and his non-stop, idiotic musings gave the agent the ammunition and negotiating power.

I don't think Sterling's peeps would have leaked this news to the press if he didn't already have a new club lined up.

You're right. Keep him on the graph. Another reminder of what a great season of progress it's been.

And why were these negotiations leaked to the press? ...

Everyone looks bad in this case, and we shouldn't instantly think that the club are the good guys in all of this. Something that Tony Barrett from The Times alluded to.

Nope. The agent could have used Rodgers' comments to negotiate a deal last season. He didn't because he wanted to wait to set up his own company and take a bigger slice of the commission. That move has already cost Sterling £3.5m so far in lost wages.

Also, Sturridge is on £140k. Is it fair to say that Sterling wants the same ...? Does he deserve the same? He has far more potential than Sturridge and will certainly play more games ...

Sturridge earned that by being the 2nd highest goalscorer in the league and a rate of 0.7 goals/game.
