“The terrible loss of life in the Germanwings plane crash is tragic, and we send our deepest sympathies to the families. Whilst the full facts are still emerging, there has been widespread media reporting speculating about the link with the pilot’s history of depression, which has been overly simplistic.

Clearly assessment of all pilots’ physical and mental health is entirely appropriate - but assumptions about risk shouldn't be made across the board for people with depression, or any other illness. There will be pilots with experience of depression who have flown safely for decades and assessments should be made on a case by case basis.

Today’s headlines risk adding to the stigma surrounding mental health problems, which millions of people experience each year, and we would encourage the media to report this issue responsibly.”

Exactly right and some of the reporting (Daily Mail) has been poor.

Many people suffer from depression, some sufferers get to the point where they feel suicidal and some follow through with it. However, what this man did was not merely suicide, as he carried out an act that he knew was going to result in 149 innocent deaths. Virtually all suicide victims take their own lives with no thought of 'taking anyone with them', this man was so self absorbed that he patently did. He goes to the grave as a mass murderer. Fortunately people like this prick are extremely rare - like all mass murderers

you would never survive a jump from 36,000 feet, your blood would start to boil at 10,000.

Well you jump when you're lower then don't you. Everyone gets their parachute on, crowd round the door, then open them and everyone gets flung out.

At least some might stand a chance, better than none.

I'm pretty sure it's not as simple as ripping up a piece of paper and there will be some kind of flight allocation / schedule programme for pilots and therefore it should've been flagged that he was signed off sick.
Why? He goes to his local quack, the quack signs him off. The repsonsibility to inform his employers is his.

They probably had special gear and training to jump from those heights. Similar to deep water diving. I've no doubt if some general fat bird jumped out a plane at 36000' in normal fat bird holiday attire (mini skirt and a crop top) she'd probably end up passing through the bakers gates brown bread.

How high up was that Red Bull dude? From the images at the time I'm quietly confident it was higher than a plane flies.

Pathfinders( soldiers who jump in prior to an Airborne assault to mark out the drop zones) jump at an altitude of 35,000 feet when HALO or HAHO jumping.

A HALO jump( High Altitude Low Opening) can be quite dangerous apparently as they deploy the parachute at the last possible moment to avoid detection.

I haven't done one but I know a man who has.

I'll ask him if his blood has ever boiled next time I see him.
