May may have said it was blown out of all proportions, but he also said he was too blind drunk to notice anything. A rather inconsistent witness.

Chris Evans said on the radio this morning that he won't be, so the people waiting outside the studio can go away.

Well yes, they could have done, and it seems they did. It was Clarkson phoning to apologise to the Director that kicked this process off (which all seems a bit unnecessary and daft to me).

Just by way of a straw poll - I'm genuinely interested - has nobody else ever got into a heated disagreement/scuffle type situation within their workplaces? I certainly have on a couple of occasions (and not always within the volatile creative environment), and Dani Osvaldo definitely has - you tend to sort it out internally when things have calmed down or over a pint, and it sounds like this could have happened easily in this instance.

I'm not defending Clarkson and I think he's a wally, but I find the "holier than thou" stuff (not here, but across the internet and in some of my friends) equally distasteful to be honest. It smacks of an agenda and I'm no fan of that.

I have never attempted to settle an argument physically (which should come as no surprise) but I have also never seen it happen between male co-workers either. Even heated arguments never went on for long either. Unless someone's idiocy threatened the safety of yourself or others, I can't even imagine why it would. Differences of opinion are surely best sorted by argument/discussion, because what does physical supremacy prove...doesn't make you right does it, just more violent or stronger.
I agree about trying to settle things between you rather than involve management, but remember Clarkson was on a final warning...he had previous. The BBC (once they became aware) has to support the injured party. From what we hear (gossip I know), a lot of people who work with Clarkson want him dealt with. If this is how he behaves, he must be hell to work with if you are the little guy. As they say, be careful who you tread on on the way up, because you will meet them on the way down.

I have certainly had heated discussions at work, but never physical (although I did throw a pen across a board room table once, during a heated discussion).

I like Top Gear and I like Clarkson on it, so maybe I am unusual in that I can say I like it and him, but also think he is a buffoon and that the BBC have taken the moral ground, even if it is over an accumulation of controversy rather than the one incident. It is not necessarily about being holier than thou, but it is equally distasteful for someone to say, "oh it could have been sorted out over a beer," especially when that is from someone who is a fan (not you LTL)... if they weren't a fan, they would be agreeing with it. To me that approach smacks of double standards or a 'not in my back yard' view and.... :) ... I'm not a fan of that :)

I think they've done the right thing but it is not because I don't like the program or Clarkson. I do.

Oh I completely agree Fran. I've never actually been in what one would term as "a fight" in my adult life, despite having boxed at a low level for some time. It's just utterly pointless and shows a lack of imagination! Saying that, there was one incident where I was working in recruitment (ugh!) where a co-worked in the pub was hassling a female friend. I asked him (very nicely) to leave it out and he grabbed my shirt and started ripping it - my instinctive reaction at that point was to hit him to stop him, and I did. Not something I'm proud of (well, maybe a little as he ran off crying, which under the circumstances was pretty funny). I found him shortly after and apologised for hitting him. He mumbled something back. That was it. I never stopped thinking he was an idiot, I suspect he never liked me much either, but we carried on working together. The idea of involving management or trying to get one another in any more trouble was anathema.

    I've also seen a drummer hit/throw things/behave like a child....but then that's drummers for you....

Why could we not have sacked Osvaldo?

*makes mental note, to not fallout with LTL*

On Osvaldo, we could have done... probably, but I suspect that the commercial monster took a higher view than the moral saint.

I hear you FLT, and I think under the circumstances they've put themselves in a position of 'damned if they do, damned if they don't', but all things considered this was probably the only course of action. The part I struggle with is that there was no official complaint lodged, so I just think, having been managed and having managed people myself, there were far better ways of dealing with this internally.

The guy it got reported to (whose name escapes me) is widely known to have it in for Clarkson and sounds like a 'sort' himself to be perfectly honest. That's the part I don't really like in this whole episode.

It was an impulse buy. My thought process:
    1. Am I doing anything over Easter? No.
    2. Do I have the car available? Yes.
    3. Are tickets reasonably priced? Yes

    **** it I'm going.

Clarkson has yet to be contacted by the BBC while they are saying no final decision has been made.

I am just jealous... suggested a trip to the in-laws for Easter as they are in the NW, thinking I could drop out Saturday afternoon and pop over to Goodison. Instead, I end up with them coming here for the Friday to Monday

Possibly LTL, very possibly. I do have been in both these roles..... if you had an employee that you had thought would be maybe best moved on and something like this came up, would you be tempted to seize the opportunity? Tempting.
