Gus Poyet has been sacked by Sunderland, with the club currently sitting one point above the relegation places. Fans threw objects at the Uruguayan during Saturday's miserable 4-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Aston Villa.

Sunderland haven't won in their last seven matches and the club have seen fit to part company with their manager.

Poyet took training on Monday morning, but was sacked by the board at a pre-arranged meeting afterwards.

The club are now looking for a short-term replacement until the end of the season, with Dick Advocaat the favourite to take over.

Club parts company with head coach.

Sunderland AFC have parted company with head coach Gus Poyet this afternoon.

The club would like to place on record its’ thanks to Gus and wishes him well for the future.

Chairman Ellis Short said: “I would like to thank Gus for his endeavours during his time at the club, in particular last season’s ‘great escape’ and cup final appearance, which will live long in the memory of every Sunderland fan.

“Sadly, we have not made the progress that any of us had hoped for this season and we find ourselves battling, once again, at the wrong end of the table. We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed.”

An announcement will be made in due course regarding the head coach position.

what are our options now for a short term, rest of season, replacement ?

I cant think of any apart for the Dick Advocaat.

Big Sam might be the answer in the summer, but I doubt his current club will let him talk to us at this stage in the season
