Players look at what they see in training and then make their own selection decisions. They can and do live with disappointment, as it is a part of true squad football. What I mean by true squad football is when all of the squad can be selected on merit because they fit with tactics and are good enough to compete. When players see others being given starts they don't believe they deserve,or played in a way that they believe is wrong, then they will inevitably express that opinion.

Some managers will speak the truth when they say they expect players to be banging on their doors when not selected, but some say that when the reality is they can't tolerate the implied criticism. I think Bruce does not like criticism.

I have regularly defended Paul McShane on here and, earlier, on the HDM site. I believe he is a decent CB and a half decent RB. I believe he has a passion for the game, a passion to win, that I would wish to see in every squad member, but, unfortunately, I don't.

This falling out with Bruce has been coming for a long time; why wouldn't it? He is dropped for long periods, he is then brought in and gives MotM performances, he wins praise and is then dropped. I said it six months ago and I'll repeat it again, Paul McShane should leave and enjoy the remainder of his playing years elsewhere.

Steve Bruce is impressing me less with each game that is played. The cry of injuries and suspensions is masking his strange need to tinker and reinvent players as something they are not. Changing his team selection to match the opposition is fine, many managers do it, it does not mean they don't know what their best eleven is. Losing the majority of games, picking starting elevens that need early, half-time subs (which then leaves us vulnerable to playing with ten men or eleven including walking wounded), making subs to defend a lead that loses that lead because he changes a positive attacking attitude to a negative defending struggle, all of this is poor management, poor coaching.

Paul McShane is a symptom, not the real problem; Alex Bruce and him are of an ilk, but I prefer Macca as a CB. I always find it a sad state of affairs when, to explain why one player should play, the options have to be slated. This malady we have with Macca is a deeper thing and it is why a squad of decent players just can't seem to turn the corner to where they should be, they lack the direction they should be getting from the manager.

The Burnley game was a watershed of negativity. Players didn't turn up against a team they knew they could and should have beat at home; they were sent onto the pitch with no confidence, no passion, no idea what it is they are expected to do. We watch the games and we, if we are honest, are all too frequently left in the same mind set. But Bruce knows, doesn't he, so that's alright then, it will turn around, won't it? After all, it's only been a short blip, hasn't it? In Bruce We Trust. <ok>

Excellent post Fez

This is probably nothing more than Macca saying to SB that he wants to play regularly and SB saying he cannot guarantee it, so Macca saying then he prefer to look for another club. In this case he will have no need to train with the first team squad just keep his fitness up.

I would say, if that's the case, it amounts to poor management.

You never know when you might have an injury crisis, you never know if that player will find a new club. For me every first team player should be treated and respected as a first team player until they leave.

What if we need to call on McShane now over the festive period? He's likely to tell Steve Bruce he's got a bone in his leg and injured himself anticipating Christmas dinner. Thanks but no thanks, I'll take christmas.

Why was Ben Arfa sent away? His performance was poor yes but, no worse than performances of others we've seen over the course of this season and last, he switched off when tracking a runner and cost us a goal, how many times last season did Elmo switch off and cost us a goal? How often was Elmo sent back to Egypt?

Why was Ben Arfa played out of position and used as a scapegoat by Bruce when it inevitably didn't work? Why does Bruce single out particular players? Why does he never hold his hands up and admit he made a mistake? Why is it always a/the players fault and why does he always give them a public dressing down in the media?

Why are we struggling to fill our bench today?

He's had alleged/reported bust ups with

  1. Sheff United board
  2. Huddersfield Town board
  3. Crystal Palace board
  4. Kenny Cunningham
  5. Birmingham board
  6. Robbie Savage
  7. Mark Bowen
  8. Amr Zaki
  9. Paul Scharner
  10. Marcos Angeleri
  11. Kenwyne Jones
  12. Anton Ferdinand
  13. Kieran Richardson
  14. Hatem Ben Arfa
  15. Paul McShane

That's quite a list.

Quite a list of ****s

Even if all of those were accurate, it's less than one a year while he's been a manager, I'd expect every manager to fall out with someone at least once during a season.

I think any manager who has managed as many games as Bruce has a list as long or longer. Without a doubt. Also you can hardly say he's had a falling out with Ben Arfa and blame Bruce for that, when it was quite obviously a move that just plain and simple didn't work out for either party.

Sydney, I didn't. In fact I've laid no blame at Brucies door anywhere in that post. I made the point of putting 'alleged' and 'reported' in my original post to outline I wasn't blaming him and in the post you quoted I clearly stated 'I'm sure some have a shorter list and some have a longer one.

The only people putting emphasis on the length of the list is you two and Bum. My reference to it being quite a list was actually to the very very strong characters on there. Add Gyan to that list too and he had no control over Cattermole. Forget the length. Didn't even occur to me, why would it? I haven't compared it to anybody have i? I was just mussing whether Bruce can clash with certain characters and if certain characters can clash with him. Not a necessarily a bad thing, it doesn't have to effect his management, maybe he just needs to take a bit more care in who he gets into bed with so to speak, He signs or inherts and keeps a lot of 'trouble makers'. Given some of the names on that list surely you can see in hindsight that the Ben Arfa loan was a bad option and a wasted loan. Maybe he could neglect players who aren't in his plans, there's lots of reports of that too. On Macca, if Bruce claims there's no bust up with McShane, as he usually does then it would be a disgusting way to treat the lad, though he could quite easily hit his limit and spat his dummy with Bruce.

Think lads before you decide other peoples sentiments for them. I was just musing out loud. No finger pointing at Brucie at all just trying to get into his psyche to try and Gage an understanding, it's not fact, it's not even an opinion. Just pondering. How could it be anything else? It's a thread based on speculation <ok>

If that's the case then I'm not sure why you included club boards? If you're making the point about the personalities he's clashed with?

Players and managers have fall-outs all the time. It's just what happens when you have 25 competitive sportsmen in a tea environment.

But McShane broke the golden rule - going public.

He's history.

McShane is training with the U21s, it's a bit more than McShane moaning about not playing..

This. He should in the squad somewhere today with the injuries we've got. If Maguire takes his place we know Macca is well out of favour. Training with the U21s is more serious than just not getting games.

And talk of his wages comes back to Bruce again. During Maccas renaissance season he publicly said he can have a new deal with the same inflated salary he was already on if we got promoted, which of course we did.

Not factually accurate at this moment (even with the west brom cup defeat we are talking 8 defeats in 17 this season - throw in Europe and it's 9 in 21).

Just saying.

A player will never be told to train with the youth squad if he is uninjured and available. Macca is being snubbed as an example to others; he is a very popular player and he is not a piss-head, hard living tosspot, he is a professional and he speaks as he finds, eventually.

I take your point, but I was thinking of 2014, which is what everyone has now focussed on and his results are dire, even with his own acceptance thet he was allowed an excellent summer window!
