"Boss, just found out there's a Mexican bloke. Quick. Plays in the Dutch league and he's got a minimum fee release clause for £2.5m"

"Anyone after him?"

"Nah"

"Who likes Dutch players?"

"Man United and Southampton"

"Okay, say Southampton are after him as he wouldn't go to Man United"

"Right you are boss"

So we now know what you do for a living LTL

I think this could be the most exciting January transfer window ever! We seem to have more cash to splash than some of the bigger clubs and a manager who knows where to spend it - stoked!

I'm not sure we will spend big in January....surely only if someone we really want becomes available. Some think we will go for broke because of our present position of being close to CL qualification...getting players in to cover our lack of depth. A difficult decision for Saints....do we go for it with the riches available in the CL (though remember we may be in the qualifiers) or do we say that this will be a decent season anyway and we could spend the money more wisely in the summer. I think it all depends on available players....can't see us going all out this season if it doesn't fit our long term plan. On the other hand, will we get another chance when the 'big' clubs lose so many points. I'm just glad it ain't up to me (as are you :)).

But hasn't he been quoted as saying we won't be spending much? And didn't Reed say the same thing?

If we are serious, about getting into Europe, then bringing in 1 or 2 players is a must, for me.
Yesterday's bench, owing to injury and illness, was quite weak, and Ronald doesn't appear to buy into Les Reed's opinion of young Harrison Reed, or he might have given him the second half yesterday, rather than disrupt the back four.
We still don't know when JRod will be ready to play, JWP is still a couple of weeks away, Mane is off to Africa, in January, and it looks as if the non stop whirlwind of fixtures, has caught up with Tadic and Pelle.
Another creative midfielder, and striker would be on my wish list, as a minimum.

i am with St Badger, if we still have ambitions for a European place we need another couple of players to boost the squad. As we saw yesterday with the lose of Snidders RK swopped the team around and broke our tried and tested defence to cover as he obviously doesn't have faith in young Harrison Read to do a job in midfield for the team and as he was the only one on the bench it says to me we are still light especially a midfielder with a bit more creativity and another striker

Danny Ings would be a very good signing as currently we are a bit one dimensional going forward, loss of form or an injury to Pelle would leave us desperately short up front?
He's young, he's good, he's English, come on Les do the business.

3 players I reckon.

Off hand, I think we need a minimum of 3 players to strengthen the side for a very tough season. We will be fine if we want to finish mid-table or just above, but new players are needed as cover. It's not just losing...it is the effect of a losing mentality on games we should win. However, can't see it happening unless they are already lined up (which is of course possible). Are the board (especially Katharina) brave enough to push the boat out?

Ings being in his last year of his contract must mean we can get him for decent price. Burnley must rather have £5m now than get nothing in the summer.

Yes but he might the difference between staying up or being relegated.

I realise now you mean Burnley...I thought you'd started to panic about us being relegated after losing to the current PL Champions. :) We would have to offer stupid money for Ings to get him surely...far more important to Burnley. They would surely rather risk losing him for nothing than risk their PL position.

Yoshida says he would like to stay beyond the end of his contract, but there have been no talks about a new contract with Saints (according to Echo). He's done his bit for us and can do a job even now if someone gets injured, but I can't see him getting a new contract.

If he doesn't get a new contract it will have to be on the grounds that we have signed someone as good or better, we need to strengthen the Squad not weaken it.

Yoshida obviously doesn't read the forums, or he would buy himself out of his current contract, for all the unfair criticism he gets.

I think he may be allowed to leave with Stephens or Turnbull taking his spot.
