I think jose's point more was that if Courtois makes errors then he will loose his spot. Not one error and cech is straight back in. He went for Courtois on back of his fantastic spell in la liga and they both are battling it out for first team. Not cech your my number two, like it or lump it

This is just semantics. Jose already said Courtois is his goalkeeper. That means Cech is number two, like it or lump it. That may change, based on form, for either Cech or Boruc, but they are both now number twos. If they are not imbeciles they will understand that their own position in the team is now based on impressing in training and their replacements' form. That's life. It doesn't matter what the manager says.

Unless of course you are a big cry baby.

Is a difference between the chelsea bench and southampton bench? No? I know what bench i would rather sit on as a professional athlete. Not that i am sure it makes any dif to Cech.

Though i am sure southampton fans care more about what koeman does with his keepers than jose does with his

You've finally lost me now.

By just semantics, I take it you mean "just words". That's the point really, words a very powerful tool if used properly. Mourinho used a form of words that made it clear both keepers remain in competition for the jersey. He was also careful to be complimentary about both of them.

And yes, professional athletes do often behave like big babies. We've seen plenty of that this summer.

Any chance the mods can make Laurab12 "disappear"?

Err... No.

As to the question of new number two keepers, and Boruc especially, I think it is unsettling for them. They are used to playing, week in, week out and it becomes a pattern for them. There is no need to rotate a keeper. They hardly ever get exhausted, like outfield players, indeed often they just have to have good concentration, because in the best teams they are going to have long periods of quiet. Paradoxically, the best keepers get the least match practice because they are generally in the best teams.

So keepers know they are likely to be out for a very long time once they become demoted, as it were. In Artur's case, I remember him being interviewed by the Saints media, for the in-house Player, about returning to the side, and he was asked about the hard work he'd had to put in. He said he didn't have to put in any hard work, and left it at that. That could be understood in two ways.

1] I think what he meant was that the hard work for him doesn't seem hard, because it is enjoyable work.
2] An alternative view is that he thought of himself as so much better than any other keeper at the club that he didn't have to try too hard.

If it's the latter then Artur is used to having things pretty damn cosy and would obviously like it to be so again. I prefer to think that he meant the former, and that he'll knuckle down and prove that he's the excellent keeper that we all know he is. Improving on the few weaknesses and odd basic error would also see him regain the no.1 spot, in my opinion. It's very tight between Him and Forster, and rightly so, if both are to push each other.

on one hand jose's english is understandably a lot better than ronalds and so subtleties will be better catered for in his statements. on the other hand, as you say mourinho complimented cech, while koeman matter of factly stated forster was number one and boruc must be professional and provide competition because we need competition.

the other notable thing he said was that everyone knows the situation with boruc, that it is his last year and it is a selection with the future in mind. is boruc going to sign another contract if he's not number one by default? maybe not. if not, why pretend he's not up against it if he's going at the end of the season any way?

Not sure why the continuous debate about Boruc or Foster to be honest. A goalkeepers place in the team is based on form not sentiment. Whatever the right or wrongs of the situation, having a new manager is possibly going to change things anyway.
Lets face it in the main last season for the most part we only had one that was on decent form. Especially with KD out injured a good part, we only had an inexperienced youngster as back up. So Boruc for all his faults and foibles new his place was safe and he lorded it a bit around St Mary's. While we can say he wasn't a bad keeper RK has decided he wanted what he sees as a better one.
Remember his job is on the line if he has got it wrong. That is why we have brought in an experienced manager to make what we all hope is the right decisions for Saints.
No matter what nationality he is he is not going to change his decision making rationality because some fans think someone else is better or if they think one or other has been treated badly.
Sentiment has no place to play in the proceedings and any disagreements amongst the fans is not going to change things or indeed alter anything.
None of us actually knows what the full conversations that actually took place, or what was/was not said. I also include you in that info Laura most of what you have heard is hearsay, albeit closer than most, but just the same hearsay, same as the rest of us.

As my info comes from the horses mouth as they say it is not a rumour, sorry hearsay

Laura........ you should know that you are not the only one that talks to the "horses" I repeat...you were not actually there and you have not been told the whole conversation. Only certain parts....and possibly only the parts that were important maybe to Boruc. I am not taking a dig at you, you are as I have said before entitled to your view and to your admiral defence of Boruc but there are others that are equally as close to players and or managers and coaches. They just don't let people know of their involvement so as not to betray a trust. You chose to tell us your source..... your choice.

Think you have all made it perfectly clear this is a place I am not welcome. Thanks

And added I am not betraying any trusts

I find it strange that we prioritised a goalkeeper when an upgrade in defence or attack would make a more significant difference. Yes, Forster may have potential but I would not say he is miles better than Boruc but a good defender could be a lot better than Yoshida for example.

It wouldn't have been either/or though Odd. An opportunity came about to sign England's number two goalkeeper, whilst our current keeper is 34 and only has a year left on his contract. We had the money - seems a sensible move. I certainly don't think it would have any impact at all on whether or not a defender or attacker is signed.
