Strange article. `Southportâs Jack Rodwell signs for Sunderland Southportâs Jack Rodwell has signed for Sunderland today (Tuesday 5th August 2014) in a £20M deal over 5 years. The 23-year-old has struggled to break into the first team at the Etihad Stadium since arriving from Everton in a £12m move in 2012. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet faced stiff competition from West Bromwich Albion and Southampton, but Rodwell will put pen to paper today after a medical. Rodwell has made 26 appearances in all competitions in two seasons with City` Rodwell has signed but will sign after a medical.
With Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell undergoing a medical ahead of a five-year deal to Sunderland this summer, the Black Cats are excited at what the 23-year-old could achieve at the club this season and in the future. Signed from Everton for £13m in 2012, Rodwell never established himself at the club, with injuries playing havoc with his form and the minutes he’d be afforded on the pitch. The England international amassed just 953 minutes in all competitions for the Citizens in his two years at the club. Sunderland lost midfielder Jack Colback to rivals Newcastle this summer, Craig Gardner joined West Brom, and David Vaughan joined Nottingham Forest. As a result, the Black Cats were thin on quality replacements. But now it’s a new chapter in his career with Sunderland and manager Gus Poyet will be delighted to be signing such a talent. It’s likely Rodwell will come straight into the engine room due to the summer departures to protect the back-line and break up the oppositions' attacks. But he’s not just good for tackling. The 23-year-old is strong in the air and he has good pace to ensure he’s not being given the run-around in midfield. He keeps the ball well too, boasting a 90% pass completion in 2012/13. Rodwell is also versatile, being able to play in defence at the heart of the back-line. Rarely does the midfielder venture forward, but with Sunderland conceding 60 goals last season, they are in need of a defensively-disciplined player like Rodwell. Rodwell made just one Premier League start last season. The writing has been on the wall for some time. Sunderland are fortunate to have won the race for his signature and there’s no doubt he will be useful instantly. If he wants first-team games, he’ll more than get them with the North-East side. It’s a good move for both parties.
Still no official announcement! He could be just joining the dots in the picture! I'm not celebrating till its on Sky as a done deal!
